I don't know about Canada, but here there's no "cooling off" period for car purchases. Once you buy it, that's it. I'm sure the dealership will buy it back, but you'll take a hit on it for sure. Maybe a bit less of a hit if you offer to buy something else from them in exchange versus asking for your money back.
What's wrong with the Boxster? Did someone call it a "chick car" or something?

Five weeks and 3,000 km? It's yours. A 'changed my mind' argument is hopeless.
Your have two choices, trade it back in on another car from the same dealership and hope they will be fair wilth you, or sell it and take your losses now. |

Someone in a Miata pulled up next to him, pointed and yelled out "Chick car"...

Sure, they'll buy it back from you, no problem.
As long as you are willing to pay $2 per km for what you drove it. You'd be better off trying to sell it privately, put an ad in the papers in your area. |

- You can sell the car outright and start over again...
- Trade it at the dealership where you purchased it and hope they treat your right (as suggested above) - Trade it in at another dealership that has what you want.. With either of the trade scenarios you will probably end-up coming out of pocket because you're probably upside down in the Boxster.. (you owe more than the book value) I would try to sell outright first.. park it on your lawn with 4 sale signs in it, advertise in your local paper or autotrader or something. As far as Boxsters being a "chick car"..... well um, they do refer to them as being "the Porsche w/Panties" ![]()

He shouldn't be upside down (yet). The down-payment is gone, but the value of the car should cover the loan right now, shouldn't it?

PBH..
$4k is not really a down payment. You have to figure in tax, tags and registration fees.. tax of course is based on the final sales price of the vehicle. Don't know anything about Canada but here in the lower mid-Atlantinc you are looking at between 6 and 7% of the sales price. In essence, by the time you finish that process roughly $2k of that $4k down payment is gone.. so basically you put $2k down on the car. We don't know what he paid nor do we know what year the car is...so we can only guess at a vlaue. What you can bet on is that the dealer made a profit, and with a limited amount as a down payment... it may very well be upside down.. Sorry!

Boxters from dealerships here in Canada are very expensive. Add to that a $1.09 Canadian dollar against the US $ and you're going to take a haircut trying to sell the car back to the dealer. Its pretty cheap for the dealer to replace that car right now.
Finance and registration fees can equal 2% of the purchase price and GST + PST add up to 12%. Also it would make a difference if it was leased or purchased.

No way can you just return it!
You can ask the dealer if he'd take it back and forgo the equity (if any?) You might want to consider a marketing strategy.......? Find out if the loan is transferrable / assignable? If it is, just advertise the car for $1.00 and take over the financing. Put the details of the financing in your ad; ie: monthly payment, etc. Unfortunately most peoples definition of "affordable" is whether they can afford the monthly payment; no money down and an affordable payment will surely bring you a buyer. Then go buy a 993!! |

You guys are harsh, the Boxster is a very neat car, handles well, and is true Porsche in and out. I have two (one project car for the book, one Tiptronic for the wife), and they are fun to drive. I'd say that their only real downside is that new they are a bit overpriced for the power they deliver, but other than that they make great cars.

Wayne,
Agreed, they are great cars but that isn't really the point. Boxsters in Vancouver are high margin cars and can be replaced wholesale by a dealer for a fraction of their retail price.

Forgive me for stating the obvious but, make sure you like this one before you pull the trigger!
I don't think the Cayman is radically different than Boxster other than being a coupe.

there's indeed a big difference between an '03 boxster (986) and an '06 cayman s (987)!

Go back to your 911 and drop the boxster..
I noticed you have no idea what you are buying..
Elder 911 are built for tough men (real sports car) boxsters and caymans are for pretty boys (girls).. I my self owned a boxster and just bought a 1978 911 SC, oh boy what a gorgeous car, so sport so tough… Im glad I got rid of the boxster Think about it and get back to your 911….learn and drive.. This happens when you don’t know what to buy and start for the best thinking you are buying scrap…now you had a 911, you find everything under that…. ![]() |

boxter - check engine light
I've driven a Boxster, and agree that they are very nice cars.
I seriously considered a used early 'S', but I've been told that the early ones had engine problems - the mechanics at the local dealer were calling the "check engine light" the "change engine light". Porsche deserves a lot of credit for making good on the warranty engine fixes on these cars. ...I was just told that the latest issue of Road & Track also mentioned the CEL indicator alternate name, in their "used car classic" feature. |
