Rotors

Took my coupe in the other day for the brakes to be bled and new pads installed. When I picked it up I was informed the rotors had been replaced as well ($110 ea.). Seems to me at 41,000 the rotors should not be worn out. They didn't shimmy so they weren't warped, the car was not tracked at all, the previous pads were OEM. The mileage is about 50/50 Highway city. Any thoughts about how long rotors last on the Carreras 87-89 ?
Thanks
Should've asked for them and mic'd em, but didn't want to seem suspicious.

Sounds like there was no informed consent there. What kind of shop adds $440 to the bill without calling you to ask?

Ridiculous.

Regardless if they had intended to machine them and then found that they were too thin for whatever reason, they still should call you and discuss your options.

Generally you can cut them one time before reaching minimum thickness. If you know they have never been cut before, then I would start asking questions.

Nick.

Just checked our host's prices. My car: 54.90 (F) and 78.20 (R). Carrera: 78.20 and $87. In the ball park I suppose for price, but I agree they should have discussed it first and shown you the parts. My experience with these brakes is that there is a lot of meat on them. For example:

I worn out rotor that was never turned (resurfaced) will have a lip on the outer edge where the pads were not touching. I don't have the wear spec in front of me (difference between new thickness and minimum thickness) but it's pretty wide, so that lip would be quite tall.

I'm just certain your rotors could have been resurfaced for $20 apiece, max, or just left alone. I'd want them back. And maybe they need to be asked for them.

Without a doubt, the shop should have advised you before replacing and defintely ask for the old ones back. As far as needing replacements go, I just did the fronts on my 81 911 Turbo at 31000 miles (yes, that mileage is true). In my case though, the PO had substituted the OEM pads with some cheap ones that were the wrong compound (too hard). If I'm not mitsaken the original is 22mm and minimum is 19mm. This should allow at least 1 rotor turn. I only wish that I could have replaced mine for under $100 each! In the Middle East these little jewels cost almost 3 times that!

I had a local mechanic look at me like I was from another planet when I asked for an estimate. His reply was, "most people who bring their cars in here just want them fixed, they don't ask what it costs". I haven't ask for any more estimates there, because I haven't been back there. By all means, go back to this shop one more time, to retrieve your old rotors.

I was told this by a friend who is a good auto mechanic and used to work for a new car dealership.

This is going back a couple of years, but in this particular shop they needed to do an average of $350 of work on every car that was brought in for repair or service in order to make money. Gotta pay the rent, gotta pay the mechanic, gotta pay the kid that hides the car from you so you can’t change your mind, gotta pay the owner a profit, and my favorite - you gotta pay the guy in the white coat who writes down your problems and takes your money.

And you wonder why they find ways to spend your money!

Personally, when I can’t do the job myself I’m happy to pay a professional who does a good job . . . . but not the rest of the gang.

Willie -- is this some sort of test? If so, it looks like more responses here. Seems that the advice has been consistent from all three locations. Did we pass? Get the old rotors back.
