Clutch Job question

I'm prepairing to replace the clutch, in my 88 Carrera or at least see what has broken.
My question is should I drop both motor and trans together or just the motor.

I'm in the garage now studying the situation, this will be my first engine drop and not sure of the best approach.

You should drop them together.

Trying to align the clutch fork and shaft setup properly and installed would be very hard as you won't be able to see anything.

KC,
From when Harvey and I did his I would drop them both together as it will make addressing any clutch fork problems much easier. Another benefit will be I am sure you will want to clean up the transmission too if it looks anything like mine. Somewhere on here is a very good thread about dropping them together on a G-50 Carrera, I will search for it tonight if I have time at work. I had saved it on my old notebook but lost it when it died. Another thing I was thinking about today while I was working on the Mercedes is if you had a large enough pair of jack stands as we will need to get the rear up pretty high to clear the intake. Northern Tool and Harbor Freight both had some very large ones last time I was at the store. I am looking forward to this repair as it will be a nice warm up for mine. If my clutch looks ok at least I can clean up the motor some as you know the PO's didn't concern themselves with the underside. If you need help you know my number and I will be at work until 7am.

KC, I have a lift table that works really well for taking the assembly out, if you need. It makes life easier. Let me know if you need it, I'd be willing to drop by and give a hand also.

I thought that would be the answer, and that is how I will do it, remove them both together.

Dan, I already have the car jacked up, it's about 23" high at the center of the torsion bar tubes. Do you think that will be enough? I'm also considering removing the rear valence.

Duke, Thanks for your offer, I have a motorcycle/atv jack that I was planning on using, I had not thought about a lift table. Of course I'm not sure if my jack will go high enough, I should know more by the end of the week. Did you finish your car yet?

You dont know how happy I am that I DID NOT GO to the Dragon run this weekend. I would have had a huge tow bill, it was saturday when my clutch let go.

Your car looks really good, I have followed the progress and can say,

"them NASCAR skills are paying off"

Do I need to remove the whole bumper or just the lower valence?

Just remove the valance, and then remove the air cleaner box and throttle body. It will give you plenty of room.

Also, when you re-install the motor and tranny, you will find it impossible to insert the clutch slave cylinder on top of the tranny without opening the bleed screw into a container while you compress the shaft far enough to get the nuts on. Just remember this little nugget, it will save you some serious cursing. Learn from my ignorance.
