Bumper bracket = saftey device????

So what is the purpose of this bracket on the passenger side of the bumper??
Some USA saftey device???
Four bolts mount...see pic. heavy steel.
Wraps around the side a bit and shields the trombone and the horns...
Can I lose it?
Gets in the way of the bellows nuts, bumper extension, fender...http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1194892562.jpg
The other side has no equivalent.
78SC.

Yes, you can loose the piece. It's there because of U.S. automotive regulations. U.S. law requires a car be drivable after a low speed impact. (I believe "low speed" was originally defined as 5 mph, and was later reduced to 2.5 mph.) The plate protects the oil cooler from damage in a low speed accident.

was it aluminum?
the early 930's were formed 3mm low grade al bar stock.
still a pita when installing air scoop, or spal fan.

It's actually an aluminum extrusion, cut to length and then bent into a curve. There's foam piece designed to fit into the gap between this and the body, to direct more air through the cooler. On most cars, the foam piece is gone. If you delete one of these, you'll have a larger hole to fill.
