SC is totalled, searching data for recent sale prices

My pristine 1983 911SC has been totalled. The owner of the body shop indicates that it is not repairable due to the severity of the impact. Harley rider hit me head on after losing control and laying it down in my path. He was killed instantly.

I am shaken but ok. These cars are built like tanks. I am thankful to be alive and very proud to have loved and invested in what was my 2nd Porsche. I pray there will be a third.

The adjuster is visiting tomorrow and I can already tell that he'll be trying to screw me.

68,000 miles, immaculate inside and out. I paid $20k for it 2.5 years ago. I do have the Excellence market update for 74-89 911s (August 2007 issue).

I am looking for anyone that can help me with data from recent sales of '83 (or perhaps earlier than '83 if it will help) 911SCs that changed hands.

THANK YOU everyone in advance, please email dabishop2@earthlink.net if you can help, I'll be tracking the inbox more carefully than the forum.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1194911018.jpg

Oh Haha 11-12-2007 02:49 PM

I'm sorry for your loss, both the car and for the tragedy of the rider being killed.

IMO, the value could be in the 16,000-19,000 ballpark.

I think your best bet is to have an Excellence on hand to show the adjuster and don't settle for the first offer. While I think BA's estimates are a little high for the real world, it may be good in your case.

Crachian 11-12-2007 03:27 PM

Man, I'm sorry about all of that.

Dig in for a fight with the insurance company, particularly if it's Allstate. If you're a PCA member, get one of their valuations. It's still included in the membership, I think. Now is not too late. The ins. company will try to compile some comps, which will be very difficult for them because of the low mileage and condition, so you won't have difficulty shooting at that. Tell them what you paid and then show them all the receipts for stuff you've done since then. And then find something that shows SC prices are rising. I think you ought to be able to get $20k or damn close. But it may take some time.

jkarolyi 11-12-2007 03:29 PM

I would also find documentation of your purchase price to show the adjuster...that way he knows you aren't trying to screw him. Hope you are feeling OK...it's psychologically very difficult to watch someone die...don't ask me how I know.

carnutzzz 11-12-2007 03:39 PM

Were you not able to purchase an agreed value policy?

Sorry for your loss.

lfot 11-12-2007 03:44 PM

My insurance company wouldn't even begin coverage until THEY checked out the car and gave a value for it. For what it's worth, my 82SC with 110,000 miles got a $19,000 replacement value from Mercury Insurance (big company out here in CA) just over a year ago.

Really sorry for what happened.

Dantilla 11-12-2007 04:25 PM

A few years ago my truck was hit pretty hard. I was very thorough in my documentation, and was getting the run-around for a few weeks from the insurance adjuster.

One phone call to my attorney changed everything.

By this time, I had already authorized the shop to fix the truck, which meant I was on the hook to pay for it.

I simply asked my attorney what I was doing wrong, and he asked permission to call the adjuster. Sure.

Within an hour, the adjuster called me, with a completely different attitude- Asked me what I wanted. Dumb question: Fix my truck. "Yes sir!" Truck was paid for very promptly.

If I ever get hit again, I will give the insurance company ONE chance to settle fairly. After that, my attorney will be getting involved.

I think they were trying to wear me out and go away. Once I called the lawyer, they wanted to settle immediately.

JeremyD 11-12-2007 06:42 PM

try pca and collector car on line and hemmings - find 5 examples that are for sale - at the same mileage or less than yours - same condition - etc. Print them out - tell em - to either give you the average of the ones you pull out - or they can buy a car for you that meets the exact criteria you are looking for.

JeremyD 11-12-2007 06:46 PM

BTW - sorry for the loss of your car

Joe Bob 11-12-2007 06:57 PM

I just got a PCA valuation for my 58 356 ride. It all of 5 working days.
http://www.pca.org/members/valuation.html

You need to be a member, but a member could do it for you if your not one.....

911Rob 11-12-2007 09:28 PM

That is tragic, sorry to hear the news.

Hope you are doing OK?
That is an unfortunate memory to have to burdon.
Pcars can be replaced.

lookin 11-12-2007 09:42 PM

Hey,

sorry to hear about what you went through.

regarding the insurance company, when this happened to me I did the following:

1. I made a spread sheet of all the cars I could find similar to mine and determined the average price.
2. I added on all the extras from my car that would have to be added onto any car I purchased.
3. I added on the dmv fee.
4. I added on the rental car fee.
5. I added on the towing fee.

Then I added it all together and came up with the replacement price. It took awhile for the insurance company to pay, but they did.

Good luck and once again sorry for what has happened.

Two years ago was not too terribly long ago, I would expect to get around $19K to $20K.

Davis:
I read about this in the paper the other day and did not realize it was you. Very tragic accident. Leith has an extremely low mileage 82 or 83 in the N&O advertised for about 19K if that helps. Good luck.

JeremyD 11-13-2007 04:45 AM

there is a low mileage SC on this page for $35000

very sorry this happened to you and the Harley rider...
one approach is to get the ins. company to agree on the replacement value as described above.. then you get them to agree on a price for you to buy it back from them (when they pay you they "own" the car). I assume many of the key mechanical parts are in perfect condition. This way you purchase e.g. $15k worth of very good and known parts at e.g. $3k or less. You then buy a car (at a very much reduced price) that has some marginal key components and make the swaps... it is a lot of work and hassle but you may come out ahead...

gigem75 11-13-2007 06:19 AM

I would be very interested to see how this comes out. pls keep us posted.

stout 11-13-2007 08:01 AM

Wow! How awful! :(

Very sorry to hear of this, and hope you are doing okay in all the ways that are more important than the car.

With that said, I'd think a 68,000-mile car in a desirable color and in top-notch condition should be worth quite a bit more than our high evaluation, and would try to get as many data points as possible to support a value north of $20,000.

Hoping this is helpful,

pete

djdsc 11-13-2007 08:54 AM

Sorry to hear this. I just went through this in March on my ’82 SC with 115K miles. After I got the news and a low ball payout from CSAA, it was my responsibility to prove the worth of the car. Ultimate payoff, $20K with the car towed back to my home.

DB_NC_95C2 11-13-2007 04:48 PM

just a quick note to say thanks to everyone. I did the PCA valuation this morning, getting an appraisal from the specialist reseller at the shop where I went for service, thanks for all the comps, I'm girding for the fight that I hope will not be as bad as it could. If they're WAY low on the first offer, I'll retain a lawyer to 'deliver' my counteroffer with all the documentation I can give him.

I had not seen the front of the car, I didn't look after the accident as the rider was lying there. I went to get my stuff tonight (while still light).
It was not as emotionally painful as I expected it would be. I was just totally stunned and in awe of the strength of these cars.

I'm damned lucky to be alive and in one piece.

It has bent front frame rails, crumpled roof and floorpan, ripples through the side, bent 930S steering wheel, I could have easily been killed. I'm amazed. The car saved my life (that and the angle at which the bike hit me, the fact he had probably laid it down instead of spearing into me, etc).

I'll follow up with results, but I REALLY appreciate everyone's help and well wishes. My girlfriend and I are considering (if we can find info about the rider's memorial) sending something, perhaps anonymously, or from her. I would fear that something from me (with my name on it) could trigger more pain and I don't want that.

Porsche-O-Phile 11-13-2007 04:54 PM

Wow, glad you're okay. Sorry for having to go through that kind of experience.

I would certainly NOT accept the insurance co's initial offer or comps. The recent unpleasant experience regarding my burned-up 951 led to a lot of good information coming my way from people in the insurance industry, lawyers and people that had simply just been screwed in the past.

I'll keep my eyes open for similar vehicles that you can use as the basis of establishing value.

You didn't have a U137 exclusion or similar "stated value" on the policy did you? Hopefully not. My saving grace was I never agreed to mine and never signed it - hopefully same for you.

hcoles 11-13-2007 04:58 PM

an other thought re. dealing with the ins. company... if you have an agent they can usually get you past the first line of defense....if the first offer isn't fair.. if you work enough they will let you talk with the real guy/gal that can make the deal...there is commonly a senior person they have that can work outside the first set of numbers... depending on your energy/time level you can try that a bit before hiring the lawyer.... they really hate dealing with lawyers because, I guess, that means they have to have thier lawyers look at what your lawyer sends and that cost them $$$. That's what I did after I hit a dear and got crapped around for awhile... I just kept at it and they eventually got me to talk with the senior guy who was very nice and got me all fixed up.
In any case again very sorry this had to happen to you...and glad the car kept you from getting badly hurt....

azasadny 11-13-2007 05:05 PM

I'm very sorry to hear about the terrible accident. I'm glad you're OK... I can't even imagine what you're going through after something that traumatic!

Formerly Steve Wilkinson 11-13-2007 08:00 PM

I'm an EMS volunteer and a couple of months ago responded to an MVA where a motorcyclist went airborne on a sweeping, high-speed bend--he got launched by the Jersey barrier that separated the four lanes--and hit a large pickup truck coming the other way, center-punched the grille and hood up high, died instantly. The driver wasn't particularly affected, since he hardly saw it, just sensed it instantaneously, but his wife, in the passenger seat, had an awful view of it all and was totally traumatized. Having seen and talked to her in the ambulance, I have a small window into what you must have gone through.

Mint '83 SC...

Just sold my mint '83 SC, 58K miles, many many "extras"...

$23K...

Yours should be in the same category...

Don't take less... prices on mint SC's are rising nicely...

gigem75 11-14-2007 06:24 AM

this thread is why I sold my Norton.

Mike Andrew 11-14-2007 08:48 AM

Hang tough on all fronts and don't let them lowball you. +1 on attorney if they won't play nice.

Curiously, I have been noodling the sale of my vintage Kawi for just this reason- too much traffic.

DB_NC_95C2 11-15-2007 04:37 PM

've retained an attorney to go back to them after what I am sure will be a lowball offer.
I'm trying to find the name of the trust for the rider's 6 year old son so I can make an anonymous donation.

These images are graphic, I'll try to reserve some space so you can choose if you want to scroll down or not, it's very ugly

Wow ... nasty damage. Your 911 looks like it did its job as the cabin appears unscathed. Glad you are ok.

Best wishes and please keep us posted.

lfot 11-15-2007 06:26 PM

WOW!!!

That's about all I can say.

911boost 11-15-2007 06:47 PM

Holy ****.

This is tradgic on many levels.

Good luck with the insurance company, and the fact you are looking to make a donation shows your character.

Bill

JeremyD 11-15-2007 07:09 PM

Wow - glad you are OK - that's pretty epic.

MOMO3.2 11-15-2007 07:32 PM

What a tragic accident. I am so sorry to hear the rider had a young son too.

The strength of the metal used by Porsche when manufacturing your 911 saved your life.

The whole thing is very unsettling and should serve to motivate all of us to embrace our loved ones and appreciate our lives.

Good luck.

Mike

EarlyPorsche 11-15-2007 07:36 PM

Thankfully at least your vehicle was able to take it. I am however surprised a motorcycle could do that much damage, I guess its because it slide fast with great momentum. On a lighter note, Momo3.2 you just hit 901 posts so its your lucky day. God bless the rider and his family.

GothingNC 11-16-2007 04:53 AM

It's amazing how the cockpit held up without the need for airbags and you walked out.

I wonder how a Targa or Cabrio would have fared in the same situation?

Superman 11-16-2007 07:32 AM

Not to hijack or anything, but I was rear-ended last night and I'm pretty sure the car is totalled. This thread will help me with my insurance strategy. Yes, these cars are tanks. Glad you're okay. It's also nice to see your compassion for the victim's family. Humans can be very cool. Or not. Glad you are.

911boost 11-16-2007 07:55 AM

Damn Supe, that sucks.

Are you ok?

Superman 11-16-2007 08:57 AM

I feel fine. My poor car is not. There is a slight crease in the upper right corner of the rear window frame. I think this is an indication that the tub is bent. Second and fourth gear are not available. I think this means the engine and transmission were relocated. I loved that car, but there are more Porsches out there I could love. Like......one with race suspension and 3.6 already installed.

Mike Andrew 11-16-2007 09:49 AM

It's getting ugly out there. I'm glad I'm in hibernation.

hcoles 11-17-2007 05:31 AM

we can hope this thread will make us think for a second about backing off a bit or taking a third look while on the road and maybe backing off a bit at the track during DE's.

Yesterday at the track while I was riding with another 3.2 driver the whole track was red flagged, so we all stopped of course. The tow truck and ambulance took off....
The problem for me was my son was in my car on the other side of the track where I couldn't see and that's where the emergency folks were heading. Talk about a pit in your stomach. All was ok for my son. A guy in a VW Jetta rolled. I can tell you this... the roofs of your basic car don't hold up to roll impacts. Guy is Jetta was fine, not hurt. Car a complete loss.
