Intermidiate shaft backlash in crankcase???
What is this and how do I measure it. Thanks.

Adam,
You will need a dial indicator to measure the backlash. A magnetic base or mounting fixture would also be helpful (although the magnet won't work on the case). Basically you are measuring the play in the gear on the crankshaft to the gear on the intermediate shaft(I.S.). That "slop" in the gears is known as backlash. Hold the crank still and then put the indicator in contact with the gear on the I.S. Then slightly rotate the IS shaft and see how much it moves as it comes in contact with the crank gear. It's a little tricky and as I recall the backlash here is next to nothing (.0011 - .0019 inches) for my O Gear. The endfloat or axial travel of the IS shaft is (.003 - .006) according to Haynes. So the metric dial guage that I use to time my camshafts can be used with a different fixture to measure this backlash? I'll need to order that part but was going to wait until reassembly. Oh well, will do now. Thanks
