MMM Fresh paint - color applied to my 71E

this morning I got up and realized that my 71E was on 4 wheels for the first time in about 6 months. The car went through some rustoration surgery and has been on blocks for a while.

So I start heading up to a friends house and realize I am being tailgated. Oh yeah, that is the car being towed to the "shop" where it will receive the last step in cosmetic surgery.

Once we arrive at our destination the car gets rolled off the trailer and backed into the stall. First the car gets scuffed with 600 wet to clean the surface. After the bath and a blow dry the foundation is laid down.

The area and car are taped off.

Nothing like a fresh cover of epoxy as a base.

After the epoxy cured the car was again wet sanded with 600 grit. This made the surface nice and smooth. It took a bit of time to dry the car but the results are worth it.

I shot 3 coats of color. the first was a med-dry coat that was left to tack for 30 minutes. this follows the spec sheet for the paint. I used Dupont Nason Acrylic Enamel. its iso-free and very easy to use. The second and third coats were laid down wet and consecutive. The car really started to shine about halfway through the second coat.

I will need to color sand and buff the paint. there are one or two runs to deal with. Overall, I think it looks pretty darn good.

Very nice. Would love to see it sometime.

I saw the picture before your name and said to myself, "that house looks like it should be in Austin"

Let me know if you need any support. I'm good at fetching beers and so forth.

Jack

Nice work! I'm envious of anyone who does their own paint job.

Gotta love a white (light ivory?) 911 too!

Jack come on by anytime. I can usually use an extra pair of hands. headliner and glass will be installed in the coming weeks.

Rich, the color is 60M Linen Gray. Its a 964/928 color. Its just a shade or two darker than light ivory. btw, Light ivory was the original color of the car.

James, Come on by next time you are traveling West. There is always a beer in the fridge and a burger for the grill with your name on it.

Today I went to clean up my workspace. The car will stay put for the week to cure. I will be out of town so there is no chance of assembly. I couldn't stand trying to picture the car without body work so I quickly set the decklid and bumpers in place.

I know that everyone will see that there is no alignment to any panel on the car. The fenders are hanging loose with two bolts a piece. The bumpers are held with one bolt per side, per end and the decklid is basically resting in place. Yeah, the hood has not been aligned either. Just think about how nice the car will look once its panels are aligned and has some clean wheels and trim work in place.

I really love the color of this car. Simple and elegant with very potent underpinnings. Its a perfect match!
