any suggestions? (pics included)

hey guys and gals...its been a while since i've posted. i recently moved to texas to start working for southwest airlines and have been getting situated before i started diving into projects for my 300k car. why try to fix up a 300k car that i bought when it had 270k? that's a really good question im still trying to answer myself. anyway, today i replaced the engine/tranny mounts. shifts alot crisper and the engine doesn't rock back and forth anymore, but i still get a klunk when engaging 1st gear quickly. perhaps thats something in the tranny. reverse is fine... maybe go to solid mounts? i don't go racing tho.

tomorrow is the bump steer kit, new spoiler lip, and a plastic dash if i get the time.

so my first question is the klunk in first gear....

my next questions are....WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT THIS: (it looks really bad)

i found the seal lip to go around the targa bar, but its like 200 bucks! do i have any other options? also, the vynl/leather below the seal that is torn...i couldn't find that anywhere...anyone have an idea?

915 transaxles make noise. Maybe you're had the worn mounts so long you've never had to experienced that noice

I'm not sure and I'm just taking a shot in the dark but, why can't you remove the trim piece, go to a "real auto upholstery supply shop" Find a piece of naugahyde and recover that piece?

If it can be done, use contact cement/ spray contact or brush on and coat both sides, let it dry then apply the new material??

Just glue it back on, as suggested above, with contact cement.
The fading on the Targa bar seal is easily addressed with permanent black magic marker (an Industrial Sharpy from Staples). You can carefully trim the loose threads if they're bothering you.
Or you can get all new seals and spend many frustrating hours trying to get it to seat right.
Good luck

DO NOT use solid motor or transmission mounts on a street car. If this is strictly a street car as you seem to indicate, new stock mounts will be fine. If you want something a little stiffer, then use the sport mounts.

I'm interested in this thread because my '79 SC does this when I engage first gear. I've been told it could be worn out CV joints.

When I first got my car, I found that the rear engine mount bar was loose where it attaches to the engine. Make sure these mount bar bolts that go into the engine block are tight - and also that the engine to transmission bolts are tight. I've seen both problems.

nope....didn't find anything. i checked all the mounting bolts and engine to tranny bolts. everyhing checked out ok.

mine only happens in first gear and in reverse but only when i release the clutch quickly. i guess its something in the transmission. have you replaced the engine mounts? it definitely helped the situation ALOT but didn't cure it all together...
