Varioram on a 3.0
A few years ago someone was putting a Varioram intake on a 3.0 motor. Does anyone know of anyone on the board who has done this?
Search function was no help ![]() Thanks.

Randy Wells had or has a 2.8 w/ VarioRam in one of his '72s:

Just how does that work exactly? My understanding was that the Varioram from the 993 motors was all about variable cam timing, i.e. a function of the cam and valves. How does this intake "work", and what does it do for a 2.8? Very interesting....

It just varies the intake runner lengths/plenum volume. Probably not worth the added complication and weight.

Jandrews, you are thinking of VarioCam.
I am sure Steve at Rennsport could shine some light on this as well. Cheers

Varioram intakes produce a very flat torque curve thats better than most ITB systems from idle to 6K. Randy's Varioram motor has many custom internals that allow that 2.8 to make power to 8K. Not cheap to be sure but like many things, you get what you pay for,... ![]() ![]() ![]()

I've followed Randy's car at Pacific Raceways, it is very fast. His 2.8 with the varioram makes fantastic torque and HP and it revs forever. The first time I saw it I mistook it for 3.6 conversion.

Hm, I wounder if putting in a straight 993 engine wouldn't be cheaper compared to all that custom work required to get a varioram intake adapted to an earlier engine. Why would you want to do it unless your racing classification requires small displacement and doesn't penalize you for intake modifications?
Cheers, Ingo

Ingo:
Racing classifications are the very reasons why Randy did the 2.8. That displacement was the class limit and they were looking for "maximum area under the curve". Mission Accomplished, IMHO.
