Moving to Newport, RI
I start my cross country caravan tomorrow morning.
My wife and I will be switching between my 911 and her Grand Cherokee and likely wise our two kids (3.5 and 1.5 years old). Our dog will remain in the Cherokee along with the trailer of stuff I didn't want my movers to touch (tools, jewelry, etc). Starting in Monterey, CA we're going to work our way over 40E -> 44E -> 70 -> 76 to cross PA. We'll then work our way our to 95N and head south to Newport once we reach Boston. A lot of people around here think I'm crazy for not shipping my car, but I bought it to drive. I'm also looking forward to experiencing the new Steve Wong chip I just installed yesterday. I'll try to post pictures everywhere we stop. We currently are planning the trip to take 10 days with a day of reserve. This is going to be a much longer trip than the one I did in 3 days coming out here by myself, and the kids are sure to make it much more interesting to say it nicely. Wish us luck and fair weather, Matt

Why not get on RT 1 in westerly RI and take RT 1N to RT 138E right into Newport? Save a lot of time and aggravation compared to driving all the way to Boston and back down 24 S....

Welcome to the State of Corruption!
![]() Agreed, stay the heck out of Boston Metro if you don't have to. Avoid the GW if you can, take the Tappan Zee. Every time I try to "keep it simple & stay on 95" through NY, I get crucified - even at like midnight to 2am. Of course, I got rear-ended while at a dead stop by a Yukon doing 50 once on the TZ... Leaves are pretty much gone by here now. Maybe a little farther south.

Congrats on the move and upcoming adventure. I just did the reverse to what you're about to do; I went from Cape Cod to LA. The P-car also got driven cross-country. Newport's great. Very pretty and historic. There's a big concours every summer, too. I just got tired of the weather and a couple other traits of New England.

Thanks for the advice guys.
Avoiding Boston is always desireable. Iwill be taking (I think its) 287 to go across the Tappan Zee, too bad I'll hit the toll in this direction but much easier than the GW. This will be my second time living in Newport and my family is looking forward to it. My wife and I meet at Norwich University in VT. We'll be spending a lot of time in VT visiting her family. We'll only be living in Newport until July and then we'll move to Ingleside, TX. So we're going to try to enjoy ourselves while we can. Thank guys, Matt

I just left the War College a year ago- I am a Suppo. If you need a place to rent, I have a friend with two properties close to work and very Navy friendly- send me a PM if you are interested.

Matt (mhoffman),
I'm going to a MCM as the CHENG. I'll be in the department head side of SWO. I just finished up my masters at NPS. Thanks for the housing offer, but we're going to be in base housing. I'll only be there for a about 7 months. We're currently staying the night in St. Louis, MO and we're off for the Dayton area of Ohio tomorow. Wish us luck, and I'll try to post some pictures soon. -Matt

Hey guys,
I made it with car and family intact yesterday. We signed the lease and dropped a few things off and got on the road again...this time to the in-laws. We're in Northfield, VT right now, but the 911 is its garage in Newport (actually Middletown). I'm going to be heading back down there Friday morning to receive our goods shipment and set-up the house while my wife's parents watch our kids. We are very lucky having her family so near us now. After that's all done we'll be driving back up Friday evening to VT. On Sunday we'll return and hopefully I'll be able to clean up each of the cars. My black Cab looks grey currently, but it ran flawlessly. Along with pictures of the trip, I'm going to also post my gas mileage stats. Steve's chip worked better than I expected. I'll try to write another post later this afternoon. We're off to buy some real winter clothes now for our kids. -Matt
