Here's a cute little number

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=563572176&r=0&t=0&showTutorial=0&ed=983772924&indexURL=0&rd=1

What are the restrictions on the "show and display" exemption?

"Show and Display" is a max of 2000 miles accrued per year. There's more detail in this month's Excellence (in the turbo shoot-out article).

Pete,

It'll be more like the $275,000 ... listed on the website!

Well, they are a little optimistic in their statement that you could use it as a daily driver in the US. You can't under the new "Show and Display" regs that opened up a loophole for a few non-US cars (959, BMW Z1, Jag 220, and a few others).
Basically, those few cars that qualify (cars from a certain narrow time period, around mid 80s to mid 90's that are of "technological interest," only a few have qualified so far under that standard), are exempt from DOT standards (i.e. crash and safety stuff does not have to be updated), but the car must still pass EPA (i.e. smog). So, basically, only half of the hurdle has been removed.
It can still be difficult to get the car to pass smog, and it can only be converted by certain Gov't approved conversion shops (although there are quite a few of them). It is generally surprisingly expensive to have it converted.

Thanks ruining my daydream with all of your matter-of-fact about the EPA Jim T.
Whoa, I am still stunned by merely the idea of that car...
Of course, you'd have to find a way to pass smog without modifying the car. Ideally, you'd have to put some filter or something that cut down emissions temporarily while it was being piped.
But seriously, Who, Who would tell you it didn't pass. No one would.
Those cars are just awesome.

The text makes it sound like the car is still in Germany, but those pictures do not look like they were taken in Germany or anywhere in Europe. Look at the cars in the background, especially the width of the license plates. There is a lot of American advertising around the world, but even a gas station on or near a US military base would have a lot more signage in the local language, slightly different wording for slogans and advertising, etc.

I think if I was spending that much money through an online auction, I would want to see some pictures of the actual car in question.

Yeah, it looks like the pictures were taken at a gas station adjacent to a freeway interchange. Why would you take pictures of a $275,000 car while you're putting gas in it. If that price tag doesn't merit bringing in a professional photographer, wouldn't you at least take it to someplace scenic?

Who in their right mind would give $275,000 to an unknown shop in Miami, the 'heart' of the fraudulent EPA/DOT conversion business in the '80s? Those guys who went to prison are all just now getting out from the last round of fraud! If it was Stoddards or Brumos, or Holbert dealerships, I wouldn't have a worry, but get real, guys!!! Zero(0) sales on eBay, and they just HAPPEN to start off with a 959 as a 'little' eyecatcher, right?

It was probably a fiberglass mockup on a Yugo chassis.

Is the door just to the rear of the driver's door for access to the oil filler?

Maybe it's where the Yugo gas tank is and the guy in the picture is just topping off the washer fluid with 93 Octane to avoid detonation in the washer motors, even though they do have a dual-plug set up.

Somehow the 959 has never been one of my favourite Porsches and there are a fair few other people that share my view too. Compare the prices for the 959 with the Ferrari F40 (which is 5 times more common) and you will find that the F40 commands a 30%+ premium in Europe for cars with similar mileage even though they sold for similar amounts when new.

For sure the technology in the car was incredible back in 1987 but it's pretty commonplace and much more developed now. The fact that it has a dismal competition record (Dakar rally excepted) has meant that in Europe, these cars just aren't that valued. Perhaps with the new US regulations the values may rise though the Excellence article will not have done any favours. It's amazing to think that a 6sp 996 turbo is now superior in every objective comparison (except 4mph down on top speed) in just 14 short years!

I don't know about you guys, but it looks a little short to me. Of course, it could just be the photo...

Does anyone know what the wheelbase is supposed to be for a 959?
