Mounting Oil Cooler inbound with exit scoop in hood?

Anybody have any more information about how to mount an oil cooler inside the body with an exit scoop in the hood? Like Rattlesnakes , Dave Leongs car in the Bay Area???

Project '72 part 6.. (lots of pics)

I think I kind of get bending the aluminum and riveting / having it welded together. But how do I cut the hood without make a total mess of it? How far etc.

Matt

You want something like this? I think this guy makes his glass hoods, super lite with the cooler opening.

Chuck Moreland and Rattlesnk posted some pictures when they did this mod to their cars, including showing how the cut and reglassed their hoods, you should be able to find them with a search.

I am going to do the same thing on my latest project, I think I have a good idea of what I will do, but I'm always open to learn from others so hopefully people will share some more pictures and details. I waiting to get the FG hood before I start chopping things up.

Chuck's HOW TO is exactly what I am looking for. My only question is maybe finding a way to mount the cooler inbound. As evidently this is the second broken cooler on the car. (first one by prior owner). Looks like a pretty intimidating project...but would be really cool.

Much easier to vent the cooler out under the car--simple cutout in the forwardmost bulkhead and a bit of the trunk floor forward of the spare tire, you lose hardly any trunkspace. But then nobody will know you're A Racer...

Note the lip on the edge of the duct exit, smooth sides and contoured duct (rather than bent up straight sections)

Also note the louvered fender panels to expel the pressurized air in the wheelwells

Who cares about trunk space on a track car?

Well, my sense is that some people are approaching this as a track-car project and others think it "looks cool."

Well in my case form follows function, there are good reasons to keep the oil cooler out of harms way and reduce the airflow under the car.

The easiest thing is to fix / buy the same cooler and put it back where it was. It has an aluminum box that vents the air under it. Since, evidently the oil cooler has now been broken for the second time (once by me) I kind of like the idea of mounting the cooler inboard and venting out the hood. I admit, like on the corvette pictures, I do think it looks pretty cool....but my car is a track car....it is sepia brown.....therefore if it helps A) keeps it safe B) provides better airflow/ more efficient cooling and C) Provides an aerodynamic advantage then I think it is worth exploring.

Chuck,
Thanks. I would love to. I have a meeting in San Jose at 11 on Monday and could probably come by after that if it works in your schedule?

Matt: we are probably going to do one in Neil Jackson's car up in Orinda in during one of the next 2-3 weekend days. His car has a box built by Tom M. that vents underneath. No good. Likely the same as your set up.

We have not decided exactly when we'll do it-- we have a lot of stuff on our list.

Maybe we can come up with a process that'll work for both your car and his.

Do you have a fiberglass hood?

Mike,
I am less than a mile from Orinda. Let me know when you guys are planning to work. I would love to help on the hood or other projects.
