No drain plug in case cover?

Changed the oil today, and had to take the lower cover off as there was no drain plug. I took off the 8 screws and dumped the remaining oil. Not bad, but a pain in the neck. Good news was the screen was clean and the gasket was like new. I cleaned up the cover and reinstalled.

Next time I change the oil, I may replace this cover with one that has a drain plug.

Is this common to not have a plug?

The plug makes it a lot easier and faster. I dont understand why they quit using the plug in the sump plate.

Factory mentality was people were just draining the oil from the sump and NOT removing the screen to clean it. By removing the drain plug and making it a solid plate, you now have to remove the whole plate to properly change the oil which would force you to clean the screen. Just what I was told by a factory tech way back when.

Mainely By Design make a nice aluminum one. I think Pelican sells it. I would a avoid a used (stock) one as they are subject to getting bent over the years and leaking.

This is the Mainely that Pelican carries.

Pelican carries several models of these; for turbo, etc.

There is a clearance issue with the cover that has the drain plug IF you have a turbo, Carrera, or later oil pump that has the screen built into the pump. The drain plug contacts the screen and the cover cannot be properly installed. Mainely makes a cover that has the needed clearance with a drain plug that can be added, but when I had this on my 2.7 (the engine had been rebuilt with a Carrera oil pump) it always leaked, which was likely due to the warping of the the magnesium case.
