73.5 CIS with a loose wire
I found this loose white wire near the fuel line on the left side engine compartment. Does anyone know, off hand, what it goes to? TIA

I have that one too and I have no clue what it is for. I have been looking for the wire that feeds the rear licence plate lamp tho'.

Loose white wire
Well maybe it isn't used for anything so we don't have to be concerned that something is disconnected! : )

I'd check it with a volt meter or test light to see if it controls your rear window defoger

0n a 1973 911T CIS (so called 1973.5 911T) car there are two white wires connected to terminal D of the CDI unit (located near the area captured in the posted image). One of these wires connects to terminal 1 (ground) of the ignition coil and the other to the ground side of the ignition breaker points. One of these may be the loose wire under discussion; since they are there to ensure a good ground connection the system could operate with one of them disconnected.
If there are already two wires connected to terminal D of the CDI unit then my conjecture is incorrect. Note that some of the wire colors can fade in time and appear to be another shade - especially in dim light; grey can appear to be white. The license plate lights on a 1973 are fed with a grey wire but there are no breaks or connections in this wire in the vicinity of the fuel lines. There is a good color wiring schematic for the 1973.5 911T here on the Pelican Parts website and an adequate B&W one in the Haynes Porsche 911 Automotive Repair Manual. The use of these in conjunction with physcial inspection of the wiring on the car can illuminate and answer most wiring questions. |

If it's white then it is probably one of the wires Jim describes. If it's grey then it's probably for the license plate lights that are in the decklid.

Jim, I have looked and looked and cannot find a loose wire in the vicinity of my wire to the licence plate lamps. Where exactly should I find this connector? I have only one ground on my CDI box, Am I correct in noting that there should be a second from somewhere? If so, I have no unconnected wires in the vicinity of my CDI box. If you have them, a few pictures may help illuminate the issues at hand.
