Inside the combustion chamber...notice the flame propagation
This isn't a 911 combustion chamber, but it's applicable and interesting. It might apply to the single plug versus twin-plug discussion that comes up now and then. This is an 84mm cylinder bore.
http://honda-portal.com/honda-videos.php?video_id=636 Some of the tech references that I have give good pictures from the early researches on combustion chamber dynamics, but this is a short cool video inside a modern engine. Notice the efficiency of the direct injector. And a longer sequence inside a combustion chamber...notice the intake. http://honda-portal.com/honda-videos.php?video_id=459 Last edited by MotoSook; 12-01-2007 at 10:22 AM.. |

Souk,
It would be cool to have a measurement of cylinder pressure, frame-by-frame. The "vapors" during inlet are low pressure condensation (into a cloud) of the fuel-atmospheric water. Intersting flame, lots of turbulance. Dirty exhaust. Probably rich to feed the cat. Very cool video. Thanks. Now why doesn't Porsche post some of their old film from early 911s? Best, Grady

Grady,
Yes, it would be great to see a pressure-vs-time-vs-piston position chart. Have you seen those high speed film from Porsche for our engines? I would love to see them! According to BMW documents, the mean chamber pressure is 16.9 bar (245.1 psi) and the max. chamber pressure is 130 bar (1885.5 psi). |
