930S wheel
I was looking at the "genuine" 930S steering wheels on eBay (the ones with the embossed horn pad and the seam down the lower spoke) and it looks like the hub is mounted off-center. Anybody ever installed one of these? Does it pose a problem? any pictures of one of these installed?
Thanks in advance... CB ![]() |

Search, this has been discussed and there are some pics on the BBS.
The off-center mounting gives you more legroom and you soon don't notice it when turning the wheel. Here is a pic of mine, but not a very good one. Recapping Recent Little Projects

The one on Ebay comes with the offset spacer. You don't need to use it if you don't want it.

The genuine 930s is offset as stated. Also note that it is not a perfect match to the black leather interior (the wheel is a shade or two lighter). The repro wheel is a better color match. Nothing is ever perfect... ![]()

Original / repro? The fact of the matter is that there was only one company that made these wheels - the same one that makes the 930S wheel now. It's not even called a 930S wheel by them - they sell adapters and hubs so it can mount on just about any car. The ones made specifically for Porsche did have the embossed Porsche crest on the center. I have seen wheels with and without the stitching down the center spoke.

I was not aware that the same company made the original for Porsche and the wheel now. I have the original NOS 930s wheel installed and have a buddy with the "repro" on his 89. There are definately differences in leather quality and color.

Factory wheels ( FWIW) are also mounted off-center...eccentrically...example, the four spoke mid 80' wheels...

I thought Momo made the repro 930S wheel?

There is definitely a difference between the one you found on e-bay and the one sold by pelican. I don't know which is better, but they are different types of leather. I have the one with the crest embosed in the leather and couldn't be happier. The leather appears lighter than the interior, but applying some leather conditioner brought it closer. I also use the offset and like the fact that it is easier to get in and out of the car. You don't notice it driving.

The embossed crest isn't the 930S wheel, it's a 968CS wheel. Not that that changes anything about it. I have one, it's great.

The repro 930s hub is totally different from a MOMO hub, suggesting MOMO is not the manufacturer.
The factory '930s' wheel was actually a 968 Club Sport part. |

Interestingly, I recently heard that both the Porsche OEM with the long seam at the bottom and the aftermarket with the 3 glued pieces of leather (FVD, Pelican, AJUSA) are made by the same company - ATIWE of Germany with manufacturing in Italy. Although I have the OEM wheel, I too have heard that the aftermarket leather is darker and is also more supple (probably due to more padding under the leather). The horn pad on the aftermarket, however, can and often does develop wrinkles for a prune-like appearance (the sample at AJUSA looked awful). I hope the OEM pad doesn't do the same (see this link for an example of the problem - 930 S Steering wheel. )
All that said, if you want an embossed/inset crest in either horn pad, it is doable but time consuming. I stripped the leather off my horn pad using a heat gun, then routed out a crest shaped depression in the underlying plastic, glued the leather back on and fitted a nice crest. I like the result much better than the "stuck-on" crest option. See below. ![]() Last edited by SDGuy; 05-07-2005 at 08:52 AM.. |

The biggest difference between aftermarket and the Porsche Techequipment wheel is the quality. The real deal feels like it uses a much higher grade leather. I also like the pebble grain rather than the smooth leather on the aftermarket wheel.

the distance from the wheel to dash may be a consideration with the cheapies ?

Ronin, you may be right about the possible need for a spacer on 911's. But don't consider the aftermarket as a cheapie either in quality or price. The aftermarket feels thick and supple. The price is no longer a big difference (I paid $390 for the genuine at Sunset Porsche vs ~ $365 for the aftermarket.
Anthony - great picture. Plus, you've given people the proper part number for the 911 (I believe yrs 74-89 anyway). If you happen to need one with a hub for the 944 like me (this part is called the "968 Club Sport" wheel), the part number is 968.347.084.00.8YR Last edited by SDGuy; 05-07-2005 at 09:00 AM.. |

"Does it pose a problem?"
Not really for me. Offset took a little getting use to but I love it. " any pictures of one of these installed?" Project 99% complete. Midway down first page. |
