clutch adjustment?
I put in a new clutch plate a few weeks ago but haven't had much time to drive the car.. Just took it out again, and here's my observations..
It grabs well , but taking off in 1st it chatters and I'm getting a burning smell. In all the other gears it's fine,, seems to grab and no smell. So my question is is it adjusted too tight? too loose ? Any suggestions? Thanks Todd

Did you check the adjustment at the clutch arm on the trans after the installation? After a few miles of driving? I would start there.

not yet as I said I haven't driven it much.. As I said I put the engine back in, with the new clutch plate and headed to the east coast..
Are the symptoms I'm seeing characteristic of the pressure plate being too tight or too loose ??

IMO, it seems the clutch plate is too loose.

What did you replace? You wrote "clutch plate"??? Did you resurface the flywheel and replace the clutch disc, pressure plate and T/O bearing?

Well, you have to take it apart again to find out, so I would suggest replacing the other parts too, or have them resurfaced, this time. Replace the flywheel bolts and, if possible, PP bolts. Your problem will be gone.
Of course, try adjusting the cable first... David

You should always replace or resurface the flywheel and pressure plate when you replace the clutch disc.
Just finished mine Saturday, went with all new parts and it's really smooth.

Always resurface flywheel, always or you get chatter the two surfaces must have a new area to seat together. there's most likely glaze on the flywheel and pressure plate which causes chatter,or symptoms which you described.

Is this a 930 or 911? I have found many times that replacing a clutch disk will smell a wee bit if slipped even a little. The new disk has "fuzz" on it that usually wears off after some stop and go driving. The disk fuzz is taking the brunt of the initial contact because the disk's surface is a little rough and not perfectly flat yet. It shouldn't take long to get it off. I wouldn't panic until 1000 miles. I give a new disk easy break-in so it doesn't get glazed.
I agree with changing the TO bearing when you are there. It's just makes sense. I don't always resurface my flywheel but I do check the runout with a dial indicator and the surface must be perfect. I'll usually kiss it with a fine scotch pad disk in my air grinder to knock off the shininess. It shouldn't chatter. If it does after 1000miles, you'll be back in there. If it's a 915 check to make sure you have clearance on the arms when disengaged. I'm unfamiliar with the 930. See the picture below.

Ok I'll re-check the adjustments.. I should mention I did hit the PP and flywheel surfaces with some very fine emery cloth to get rid of the shinyness before I put them back together..
Thanks 84 for the record it does seem to be getting better,, I probably have less than 50 miles on it right now and 45 of those are highway...
