Rough start Carrera

I have an 87 Carrera with 115k, which I drive weekly. The past couple times I have started it, the car has wanted to die and idled weakly until it has warmed up. The car had a full tune up and valve adjustment in August about 800 miles ago. Does this sound like it has something to do with the fuel pump or mototronic injection?

Not for a seldom DIY type without the proper tools. Could be a lot of things. Take it to a reputable shop and leave it over night. It needs to be cold for some of the pressure tests.

How old is the DME relay? If original, I think you should replace it and see what happens.

Sounds to me like you are in for some testing. A suspected part my be the head temp sensor.

Hmm, Common symptoms:

1. You should have a back up DME relay ($30) anyways, swap out to see if it cures the issue.
2. Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor (CHTS), uses a paper clip to close the electric loop to the DME and see if that cures the cold start issue & check the OHMs with a Multi Meter. (see if it is single or doubled wire, if single consider upgrading it if it failed.)
3. Check for intake manifold leaks, buy some ether and spray at the usual suspected 6 hose clamps to see if there is a rise in RPMs, if a rise you have a leak and need to adjust or replace hoses and/or clamps.
4. While the car is on, tap on the Idle Control Valve (ICV), lightly with screw driver to see if it reacts. Check the OHM's center terminal must read 20 OHM the outer two should register 40 OHMs.
5. Check the OHMs on the O2 Sensor, they were designed to last only 60K miles.

Do the less expensive route first, Check for Leaks, Check the OHMs and Replace the DME Relay.

CHTS $75
ICV $124-$200
O2 Sensor $135-$200

DRACO A5OG,
What do you mean by "uses a paper clip to close the electric loop to the DME"?
