What is involved in the tranny swap...how hard, and how much can one of these things be found for?

It's not simple. You've got to cut out the old torsion tubes, and -- since they're a vital part of the chassis' rigidity -- you'd need to weld in some alternate source of support (especially if you're switching to a coil-over suspension). You could used the post G50 tubes in their place, and the newer torsion bars, but it's a lot of work, and when all the welding is finished, you run the risk of the frame not being straight.
The alternative is to buy one of Patrick Motorsports' short bell housings for the G50. But that's expensive. ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T (3.6) sunroof coupe jackolsen@mediaone.net |

I doubt if the conversion can be done for under $7k, and it could easily run $8-9K, for the total costs involved! I have not seen a G-50 for under $5K.

I though I saw a used G50 with 60k mi for about 2 G on rennlist. A friend of mine in northern ontario has a 78SC chassis that has been TOTALLY converted. Were talkin' turbo brakes, RUF turbo engine, slant nose, all the goodies and I set him up with a guy who supplied him with the torsion tubes, tranny, pedal box, and from what I know, everything else that he needed for the long belhousing conversion. All this cost him $4000 Candian ('bout $2500 US!) He's going to do all the welding himself, and from the research that I did for my car, set up fee for the Car-a-liner jig (use this or Cellete jig) is about $200 Canadian. This conversion can actually be fairly cheap (I don't have the final results or costs from my friend though) but quite time consuming and a pain in the ass. You'll more than likely need the entire rear end apart and the car HOISTED to do the welding.
If you want the guys phone # I can try and find it. Adam Roseneck ------------------ 1978 911SC 3.0 roseneck@cyberbeach.net |
