I have a 81'3.0 with CIS and 964 cams,...is there any performance gains from a 3 into 1 header to hook up to my 77'exchangers Thanks Frank

Either you have headers or you have heat exchangers. I think most that have gone the headers route have been pleased, and they do offer a real power bump.

Headers is a term used to describe a type of exhaust manifold where pipes of equal (or close-to-equal) length are used to 'tune' the extraction of exhaust gas pulses. 911s came with headers until emissions laws started requiring catalytic converters, and Porsche went to an exhaust manifold scheme that was less-well-optimized.
Heat Exchangers are metal boxes welded around parts of the exhaust manifold to provide hot air for the heating system. Early 911 exhausts and the SSI-made variant (as well as other manufacturers, like B&B) add heat exchangers to their headers. You can also buy headers that don't have heat exchangers -- but heat exchangers really don't have anything to do with an engine's exhaust or performance at all. Your SC motor would probably benefit from SSI headers with exchangers or from headers that don't have heat exchangers. But hopefully someone with the same mods will chime in. You might want to have heat exchangers to defog those windows on cold mornings or for night trips through the desert.
