Which side of Exh Gasket faces engine?
Got my exhaust gaskets for 911SC 3.0liter from host. One side is smooth; the other has the steel ring jutting out. Does the "ring" side face the engine, fitting in the chamfered edge, or vice versa? ALSO, has anyone used any hi temp goop to help seal the rough surface that may be present on the header flange? thanks.

I always put the flat side of the gasket to the alum head, the head surface is more true than a header flange and let the raised ring part of the gasket seal against the steel header where the surface may not be so true.

I install the same way- ring faces exhaust flange.
no goop. the gaskets are soft so they should seal fine. If the rough surface bothers you, hit it with a scotchbrite pad or mildly stiff wire brush. Probably unneccessary unless there's really big chunks of old gasket material (or unnecessary goop ![]()

Thanks to all for the fast response. It's out into the 32 degree weather (even in the garage) to knock this off tonight!
Suuuurrrrrre, the weather was 65 three days ago, but the gaskets came painfully by FedEx truck (!?) -- I tracked them agonizingly through every gawd-forsaken city in the US as they progressed across, up and down and up again, from CA to VA. Never thought I would request USPS in favor of FedEx, but, in the future, orders from Pelican will be via USPS. |
