Question Noisy Transmission / 2nd gear grind until warmed up

Good evening everyone. I have an 85 911 with the 915 Transmission with 140k miles.

Sometimes I can hear noise from the transmission if I do not have the clutch engaged.

Also when I first start driving everyday the shift from 1st to 2nd will have a minor grind or noise however after the car is warmed up this goes away.

If I let the car warm up to operating temp before driving the minor noise / grind is also not there.

Otherwise the car shifts and drives good. Am I looking at a tranny rebuild soon?

Thanks for your time / advice. It is always appreciated.

Best regards,

Switch to Swepco for tranny oil.

Also, are you sure the clutch is adjusted properly? How old is the clutch?

I have changed to Swepco and it helped the shifting to be easier / more smooth, but I still hear the transmission making noise almost like a rattle.

Immediately when I press the clutch in the noise goes away.

Also the transmission shifts fine in all gears after the car has been driven long enough to warm up to normal operating temperature.

Before that the shift from 1st to 2nd gets a very minor grind type noise again until the car / Transmission warms up, then nothing. The car then shifts for the rest of the day normally.

If this was a clutch adjustment why would the minor noise / grind go away after the car is warmed up?

Thanks for your time and responses.

At 140k, I would suspect the release bearing is worn out if it's the original clutch?
A dry release bearing makes a grinding noise that changes when the pedal is depressed.

Swepco is not the miracle many people make it out to be.
JW uses GL5 80/90 VW oil in the many 915's he has rebuild.
I tried both Swepco and the 80/90 weight and found no difference; if the synchros, sliders, dog teeth are worn, no "wonder-oil" is going to replace a rebuild.

Does the time of day or outside temperature make a difference? Does this only happen on very cold moring? If so you might want to use a little lower viscosity gear oil..... Warm oil has a much lover viscosity than warm oil........

Yes when it is cooler it seams to make the noise or grind more until the car / tranny is warmed up to normal temps. I did add some lucas to my swepco for what its worth thinking that if it was thicker it might help.

I really would like to know if the clutch is adjusted properly. The clutch also sqeaks when I press it in.

Thanks to all of you for your time and replies.

I had a similar problem, assumed the clutch pressure plate or T/O bearing was the problem, pulled the engine and clutch was fine and within spec, but my sharp eyed mechanic (Jason at Einmalig) found a crack in the clutch actuator fork. Crack didn't open up until pedal was most of the way down and it was preventing full release of the clutch. New $90 fork and I was good to go! When replacing the clutch always check this for cracks

Actually thinner would have helped more, heat reduces oil viscosity.....

I assumed that the adjustments for the clutch had been checked.
Why not do that first?
How old is the cable?
Condition of the shift bushings?
How many miles on the clutch?
