Angry Carrera 2 V M3

I was recently looking into changing my 88 Carrera for something a bit more sanitized. Don't get me wrong, I love the old 88, but my wife, and my clients (I use it for work) have a different definition of a 'sports' car....pretty sad I know but I have been convinced I need to get something that does not 'scare' people. My 88 is very hard riding and had MAF and cams so it screams like hell...just the way I like it!. problem is I can't afford 2 cars so the 88 has to go...A very sad proposition as I spent last summer rebuilding the motor.

Anyway, I was looking into an M3 and drove a few...nice cars, strong motors, superb balance, and dare I say it, comfortable. A bit tacky but yeh, I could get used to it. I made the 'mistake' of visiting an dealer who I bought my last two Porsches from and he had this lovely red C2 with perfect black interior, he suggested that I drive it and assured me that they are way more civilized' than the 88's, so I did....and wow, they really are! almost cushy! The nmotor was a gem and the air blew ice cold, the brakes were awsome.....I could get used to this. In my opinion, It blew the socks of the M3. I am going back today to check the service. The guy said the records show the flywheel and cylinder head leak has been done. Don't know about the distibutor mod though. If I can get the dealer to put some 993 rims on it and the service checks out, I might just get it. Red not really my thing but the rest of the car is so good, I may just get over it. I know the diehard pre 90's 911 fans will be shouting 'no, dont buy that overweight, oversanitized puppy', but for my money is was far superior to the M3 and is still a 911. I will miss the raw go-cart, feel of the 88 and all the 'noise' it used to make, but I think for me anyway, is's just what I need in a car right now.

I don't think anyone on this board will beat you up for not choosing the M3. Sounds like you're making a good decision for the situation you are in.

If you are using this car for work, wouldn't a four door be better? How about a 540i? Do you have a budget you are trying to stay under?

If your wife and clients think that little of you: then get a 1987 Audi 5000 CS Quattro Turbo. They are comfortable. They are reasonably dependable. They are safe and have four doors. They get good gas mileage, and they cost under $5K I got one as a second car and its almost fun (!) to drive and has had no problems.

Keep your car. I had to sell one recently due to a "business reversal" and although I replaced it as soon as I could, those were miserable days without it.

That Audi is inexpensive because it is dangerous. They would just acclerate out of nowhere. They could never solve the mystery. Sort of like the movie "Maximum Overdrive" with Emilio Esteves. Very scary and Evil.

CS Quattro? 540i?.....no thanks, I'll take the C2. It's not that the 911 is not the right car size wise, practicality (4 doors etc) is not really an issue. it's just that the 88 is a bit too raucous for what would be an everyday driver for my current situation.
BTW, the dealer is making good the common cylinder base leak before I buy it (as his expense). Everything else is done (flywheel, distibutor, cylinder heads).

You don't actually believe this do you? Those Audi's are fine cars, and quite reliable especially when you consider their age.

The "unintended acceleration" was a stabb at Audi by 60 minutes years ago. A FEW auto tranny cars had an idle surge after startup, but they were few and far between...

The 5 speeds are less trouble, more reliable and far more fun!

I only suggested this route so you could perhaps keep the car you have worked so hard on and love and also have a farely inexpensive "other" car.

I see you are new to this board. You haven't had chance to see my constant barrage of sarcasm! When you see the words "Audi" and "Emelio Esteves" a warning light should go off. Apologies to others if it gets overbearing!
