If it was originally a US spec car, and if it is a 1972 model, then it should have had MFI originally. I'd have to have the serial number to be sure.

Some cars from Europe made it over to the US in those days, so I can't assume that it was originally built for that market just because it spent some time in California. For example, I have a Carrera 3.0 that was originally delivered to Germany but spent most of its life in California.

Also, if it was originally delivered to a country outside of the US, it might have been registered as a 1972, even if it were built as a a 1971 model, as some countries title the car in the year it was first sold, not relying on the model year designation, or year it was built.

I know that this seems a little picky but you never know.

In the pictures it is not its original color, it has been repainted. Original color was 414.
also it says on drivers side , made in germany and 11/71, so i think i can call it a 72 model?
I will post the VIN later.

Fishcop 01-02-2008 01:31 PM

Harri

I'd call it a '72, particularly as it has the "one year only" oil filler door on the right side.

HArri,

I am restoring a 1972 T also. It would be nice to share information with you. If you like you can see pictures of my restoration here:

http://www.clubbmwargentina.com.ar/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5171

There is an explanation but itīs in spanish. Anyway you can see the pictures.

Tomorrow i can send some information about doors and colors.

Regards,
Fernando.

harry,
my 72E was also olive 414. repainted red! someday i'll go back.
olive is a great and RARE color.
the black paint on the drivers door is correct and applied with a brush.
the passenger door is a replacement.
the black paint is incorrect and the stampings put it at 74+.
it will not take early door pockets.
as a plus it might be galvanized
doors were also replaced for severe RUST, its quicker.
if your gaps were good maybe the accident was minor.
you work fast!

Well, that serial number is indeed correct for a US '72 911 coupe.

Wow, thats some project. I have 1971 911T ivory white color. It has Zeniths. I've come to this forum for some advice. I appreciate your work. I've been trying to find the gas smell and oil leaks in my car for years. Maybe I should just rip it apart like you? anyways good luck, and keep up updates.

what kind of bilsteins did you order for front and rear?

Harri,
I'm in the process of restoring a 71E. I ordered and received the Certificate of Authenticity to verify that I had the matching numbers engine, tranny and so forth. One other detail was that the car originally was ordered with a 4 speaker system. I'm not sure if that means, 4 speakers in addition to the dash or not. My door panels had speakers mounted in them and I ssuspect that the other two were in the rear deck panel, but again I'm not sure. I'm researching that now and I'll let you know what I find out. My E was painted black and I've returned it to the original silver. I love that olive green and I would return the car to that color, if I were you. Per my research, the 70-71 2.2 engine compartment, wheel wells and underside are black and the trunk is body color. I think that this changed for the 72-73 model years and the engine compartment and perhaps the wheel wells are body color. (get on the Early S registry website and someone there will know).

good luck with your project,

Al

4 speakers might have been:

1 dash
2 door
1 rear.

Back again: This week body will be lacked and finished by saturday.
So far all axle parts went to powder coating. Turn signal and rear light will be restored because the reflector is gone.
Color itself looks very nice, camera gives different shade.

Harri,

I'm impressed with what you have accomplished in such a short time. The body shell looks great.

Could you let us know what company you used to re-plate the light reflectors? I have a few to do as well and would like to have a good source to use.

Thanks,
Jeff

HarriTiidus 02-08-2008 07:29 AM

it is a local company (around the world from where you are), Estonia.
I can ask maybe they have a website.

Fantastic! Keep the updates coming.

What is this process called?

Tim K

HarriTiidus 02-08-2008 11:52 AM

it is called : High vacum metalling.
As i understood , they use very strong vacum and put a layer somekind of metal. it is called also vacum-chrome.
Because they light housing itself is very expensive it seamed more reasonible to use this and same almost 5x money.

HarriTiidus 02-11-2008 12:50 PM

Recived first zinc coated parts:

Tommorow i should recive other nuts and bolts (they will be silver color)

gigagaia 02-11-2008 11:29 PM

HarriTiidus, I can't help but wonder, and forgive me for asking what is probably quite a silly question, but how did you get your car to the painters without its suspension and all that jazz? did you just roll it over on something? I would ideally like to do something similar, but right now, cannot for the life of me figure out how... :(
