A tool should be viewed as the ultimate piece of machinery; a machine to make and repair other machines. The creators, curators, doctors and diagnostics of our mechanised world. Uber-gear for gearheads.
Yet it's not always the biggest or most complex that holds the monopoly on our facination. My current golden tool is an 11/12 mm box spanner with an outrageous 'S' shaped curve on its flanks. Beautifully simple; elegantly crafty. It's like it sits in the toolbox next to the run-of-the-mill spanners and says to them: "You could only DREAM about the difficult bolts on Matt's Porsche that I've undone in my time, loosers, and he never, ever throws me on the floor in fits of frustration either." Anyone else got a Cool Tool? ------------------ '72 911 TE |

My little telescoping magnet. A small magnet on what looks like a telescoping radio aerial. You learn to love it real quick, when things fall into the wrong places.

Deffinetly my large nurf baseball bat and/or stress ball.
Without these tools, I would likley just throw a hammer and attempt to beat the living **** out of whatever item took its turn at frusterating me that day with a full sized sledge hammer. My entire family thanks these tools aswell. Adam Roseneck ------------------ 1978 911SC 3.0 roseneck@cyberbeach.net |

Ahh what a great question, it has to be the whiz wheel/cut-off tool. If something is pissing me off, chances are this can solve it.

Overall, my favorite would have to be my Snap-on pick set. Always seems to come thru for me in places where my fingers won't fit. Although in the past month, the Dremmel with a heavy duty cut off wheel has saved me several times.

Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, e.g., skill level, time, etc., I do not do a whole lof of work on the SC. However, my most cherished tool, (like Brainiac-Tyson) is my Snap-On cordless Impact gun, except mine is 1/2 inch. It will torque down the lug nuts to over 90 f/p. Of course, I always use the torque wrench to be sure. Changing track tires on the SC and snows on the Bimmer is a "snap".

A Greenlee Punch... This is a great tool
for punching perfect round holes in sheetmetal. Hydaulic operated hand pump that drives a die cutter to punch out holes. Has come in very handy for running oil lines on the 914/6 conversion ------------------

Ah - an easy question on this board (at last!).
My fave tool is a very long (30cm) flat blade screwdriver with a reinforced handle that you can hammer on (if needs be). You can get fantastic torquing power on stubborn screws, tremendous leverage (eg separating 911 engine case halves) tremendous ability to get into far corners (because of the length) and despite all this abuse its completely undamaged. Highly recommended! - roGER |

I'll agree with Roger. I have a screwdriver that is about 2 - 2 1/2 feet long. Busy tool. So is my soft faced hammer. I got a full polish Craftsman long series wrench set that I enjoy, and was VERY excited the opther day to finally find three square-drive bits for my cordless drill. I have no air in my garage and these litle gems can be used to back off nuts and bolts once they have been loosened. Saves me a LOT of time.

For sentimental reasons I'd have to say my father's old Yankee screwdriver that he gave to me many moons ago.
For pure usefulness I'd have to say my Porter Cable cordless hammer drill. Keyless chuck. I use that thing all the time...but rarely on the P-car. Working on the car, I'd probably have to say my head-mounted flashlight. I've needed that thing more times than I can count. ------------------ blue '81 SC Targa |

Have to pick my 3/8 stubby ratchet. Not too long to get in the way, not long enough to overtighten bolts. Next best tool is my digital protractor/level affixed to a smart camber gauge.

At the moment I'm torn between my 1/2in. drive battery powered impact wrench.
It is hard to believe but they really are the bees knees or my 1/4 drive socket set. 1/4in drive gives so much more feel. |
