rear torsion bar spline clarification

I need to lower my rear end by 1/2". In reading past threads, it seems the inner spline has to be moved UP and the outer spline moved DOWN. What does this meam? Does UP mean clockwise and down mean counter-clockwise? Any suggestions on this would be helpful. 81'SC

It actually depends on which side of the car you are on ... whether up is clockwise or not! If you mark the end of the torsion bar with a permanent marker, it will be obvious what change you are making ... but, a machinist's protractor with bubble level will tell you the before and after angles!

Just for the record, on the LHD driver's side -- up is counterclockwise for the torsion bar; on the passenger side -- up is clockwise!

thanks Warren, so that means on the driver's side i must go 2 notches CCW and 2 notches on the spring plate side CW to get my 1/2" lower height?

Yep! I usually tell people to mark the angle of the spring plate on the body with a grease pencil or crayon, before taking things apart ... just for reference. Sometimes it is hard to be certain just precisely how many 'notches' you have moved the bar in the socket ... until you compare angles! And, 6-7 mm change at the end of the spring plate is pretty hard to judge when it is just 'hanging there' in space!

Lagoon,

I used a silver paint marker to mark my spring plate angle. If your bar comes off at the inboard end, but is stuck in the spring plate, you can drill a small hole in the end of the plate and punch it loose. Don't grab the torsion bar with pliers or anything that could break the coating. Then seal the small hole with silicone or something once you get it back in. Make sure you lube the length of the torsion bar with grease and the splines with anti-sieze.

Have fun!
Nick.
