911SC with short r/p 915

In my daily driver 1983 911SC I want to install a short r/p 1972 915 trans. Anyone ever done this? Does it make much difference in the way the car drives? Is it messy other than the speedo hook-up? Many thanks, Jim Schrager, South Bend, IN

Yes, it makes a big difference in the character of the car. What are you trying to accomplish?

here's what you are looking at. The first is stock, the second is w/ a '72 trans. Normalized for the same tires and rev limit. the speed in gears and drops are the important things

Trying to make it faster below 60 mph

Thanks for your post, I am trying to make the car feel "friskier" below 70 mph in daily use. I don't care about gas mileage. What I wonder is how big a deal it is to make it all work. Many thanks, Jim Schrager

Jim:

Given the issues with the early 915's ('72-'73), I would suggest that you simply re-gear that MUCH stronger SC 915 to suit.

Installing a custom stack of 2nd through 5th gears makes a much bigger difference than an R&P swap and you get the benefits of the later 915.

Thanks, Steve for your post. The mods you speak of sound great! What does something like that cost? Best regards, Jim Schrager

I have a shorter R&P in my C3, and if I were to do it again I would regear and use the stronger 8:35 instead of 7:31, just to do it once and be finished with it. Actually not so much if as when (pretty soon I would say). Makes a big difference to the car but you do notice the fuel costs. So what though, you're only here once
