Hi,
I've got an '86 Carrera Turbo look which I believe has Turbo suspension and brakes. However, in Bruce Andersons book he says that the Turbo looks didn't have the Turbo tie rods. Is this true? If not is it worth replacing them with the uprated items, will I feel a difference? I've noticed a rumble from the gearbox which disappears when I push the clutch in, this is the thrust bearing, right? How bad can this get before it needs to be replaced, I think it's a tranny out job and expensive. Thanks for your help. ------------------ 86 911 SSE |

According to "Original Porsche 911" by Peter Morgan, the Turbo look package was an option in 84, and a regular model after 85. It included the Turbo''s 917-inspired brakes and 7x9x16 wheels in the package.
Where did Bruce Anderson say otherwise? ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T (3.6) sunroof coupe jackolsen@mediaone.net [This message has been edited by JackOlsen (edited 03-16-2001).] |

I don't have the book with me, but if I can remember correctly it's in the early part of the book when he is giving the model run down from the 60's to the present day. I think the text is accompanied by photo's of the changed parts laid out. In there he states that it is the complete turbo suspension package and brakes, less the tie-rods. I've heard many different opinions and wonder which is right.

Bottom of page 25, first column, under the heading 1984:
"The Turbo-look coupe included the Turbo bodywork, the brakes, all the suspension changes except the Turbo tie-rods, plus the larger Turbo wheels and tires." The thrust bearing job is only expensive if you have someone else do it. You will have to drop the engine/tranny, which is labor intensive, but the job itself is pretty straight forward. ------------------ GT911 GordonTaylor@ev1.net Spring, Texas |

So, it sounds like I could benefit from Turbo tie rods. Is the difference that great?
How bad can the thrust bearing get before it breaks, and what happens when it goes? It's just rumbling at the moment, can it wait or is it urgent? ------------------ 86 911 Supersport |

I had an 84 turbo look. It did not have the turbo tie rods and the torsion bars and sway bars were the standard size for that year.
I have the turbo tie rods on my 72. I am not sure I like them for street driving. You feel everything. But I also have sport struts, and larger sway and torsion bars. They are nice on the track though. |

I misunderstood the first post. I thought Anderson had said the Turbo-looks didn't have Turbo suspension components.
The Turbo Tie Rod upgrade is said to be most noticable at high speeds, and that it doesn't make for a dramatic change in handling, unless you're really tuned into your car. ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T (3.6) sunroof coupe jackolsen@mediaone.net |
