Red face Help - Oil leaks

I know that some leaks are common. However this is the first year that I am taking my car out of storage. Originally it was suggested that the oil return tubes shoudl be changed. However on closer examination the leak seems to be emanating from the centre "seam" between the sets of oil return tubes- form the rear it is to the right of the catalytic converter. When I started up the car this weekend - some smoking was coming from this area. Even with the engine heated up (after 20 minutes or so) the oil temperature? gage was staying at the bottom of the range.
Should I be concerned? I am going in for a 45K mile check up, what should I expect?

If there is oil pressure, the oil is circulating. It takes a long time to warm these cars up. When that occurs, the oil lines near the engine will be warm. If they are, and the gauge still reads full cold, the gauge is not being truthful and your oil temperature is probably fine.

I will check the gage again, when I take her out next weekend. in the meantime should I be concerned about the leak - since it does not appear to be the oil return tubes - which is a fairly simple task to correct/replace?

One thing you can try that may allay your fears is drive the car for a while and feel the right front fender. If oil is moving through the system it will be warm due to heat from the front oil cooler. At least you'll be fairly sure the thermostat's not stuck.

Oil leaks are tough to pinpoint. I partially dropped my motor have seeing oil accumilating, and dripping, from the center seam. I could have sworn it was the crank-pully seal or intermediate shaft seal. Well the intermediate shaft seal leaked a bit but it turned out to be the oil return tube. The drip was tricky and appeared to be the center seam. Really wash down the underside of the car and take a good look where the oil is coming from. Oil will generally noit smoke if on the center seam b/c it doesn't get hot enough to burn it. I suspect the smoke would be from the oil dripping onto the heat exchanger.
As for the guage, the others are right. It takes a long time to heat up these motors. You didn't say wether the 20 minutes was driving time or idling time. If the latter, the motor will not be up to operating temp. These cars need to be driven to get them to operating temp.
