Talking Chevy V8 at the track

Here is an update on the 911 V8. I just got back from talladaga grand-prix track and had a great time. The car handled great thanks to new and bigger torsion bars and larger rear sway bar. I have to say that in my group which was run group 2 I was the fastest one out there, I'm not trying to brag because it surely wasn't my driving skill, just trying to show that the V8 handled great. Now that is not to say that there were not cars out there that were not faster in the corners, there was a race prepped 944 normally aspirated that was faster than I throught the corners but I made up for it in the straight aways. One thing I was happy to see was that as I was chasing down a 993 that was in my group he lost it in turn two and spun right in front of me, unfortunatily my first response was to lift which I did just long enough to realize my error, but I poured on the coal just as the rearend was stepping out and instead of spinning right with him the car straightened up and took off like a bullit. Now this did scare the *&%$ out of me but I was very pleased that the car remained composed. My instructor who was wonderful, the best so far, was pleased with the cars manners even though he admitted that he was concerned at first.
The turbo four speed was perfect on the track, this conversion which I initially thought was to be a direct bolt in proved to be a bear, I had to fabricate the mount and such. Now I am torn weather to start lightining the car via A\C removal etc, or drive and injoy. I'll tell you, this was my fourth drivers ed and I am hooked, if you have not participated in one of these events you really need to try it. my goal is to make it to instuctor level within two years.

On another note there was a Kramer 935 copy there, at least I think it was a copy, that was wicked fast. It was turning lap times of around 1.02 min. but was neat was that there was also a v8 power 944 that was turning times of 1.04min just shows what you can do with alot of money, time, skill and driving ability. I love this country!!!!!!!

Will keep every posted.

Sounds like a lot of fun!!
Leave in the A/C, you have torque so don't need to lighten up anything. Power AND comfort, OH YEA.

Wink

thanks for the update - that is very interesting. How did the cars temp look relative tot eh outside temp? Got any worries about summer racing?

I bought a Datsun Z race car from Alan Smith five years ago. I think he drives a formula now, anyway, did you notice him as an instructor? I earned my SCCA license on that track and had a ball! Surly any handling weaknesses would have shown themselves there.

Well done, my friend!

KS,Very interesting and i should said as i keep spending big bucks on my 911 i have come to a better understanding of why people do this type of conversion but thats another subject,if you had to price this conversion assuming that you did all the work at $60HR,what could be the total for a similar proyect, just curious because i see more and more people doing this type of conversion.
Regards Juan

Thumbs up

The temp was about 200 and I don't feel like it will be a problem this summer. Last year I did a very hard run up the mountain were I live when it was 100*F outside, no kidding and the temp never got above 220. And I will leave the a/c for now I don't feel like I should make that decision until it is at least 90+ outside, then I can make an educated decision.
As far as the price I only know roughly what I have in parts and that is over 10,000.00 now but that 930 for speed cost a touch over 4,000 for clutch and everything. I would some were around 6,000.00 but if you include labor than they say it will take 40hrs, so lets say 60 to be safe. 60hrs x 60.00=3,600.00 labor and total of 9,600.00 for parts and labor. I am not one to keep tabs on what I have spent, it would probably scare the hell out of me so I just build as I can and don't plan on selling.
