What should my idle be?
 

I just got my '83 SC back from getting a tune up, valve/ timing adjustment and compression/ leakdown test. All the numbers were great. I am noticing that my idle is now around 1500 RPM, vs the 1000 that it was before. Which is correct? Is this highjer RPM a problem? Should I get my mechanic to fix it?

A high idle won't hurt anything, but it's annoying.

Just reach in with your left hand a turn the big knob on the throttle body clockwise, while looking through the rear window at the tach. Do it when the engines warm. Difficulty Level 0

I think spec is 950 to 1100. Although I know several people who set it higher than this. Not sure why, but they seem to like it. Mine is set at 950. When I check it with the tach on my timing light, my dash tach is off (low) by about 200-250 RPMS.

Yeah, just turn the large bypass knob until you are happy. Very easy, nothing you can really mess up.

Hold on: are you saying that it "floats" at the higher idle, and will settle to a lower rpm at times? That is, it is at 1500rpm and you, for example, cover the airbox intake and it goes down? That would be a different situation than resetting your idle via the air screw on the throttle body.

No, there is no fluctuation. Once the car is warmed up, it consistently runs at 1500 RPM. Sounds like the knob adjust will work!
