Oh goodness - headstuds - Mechanic?
Steve and I pulled the engine and transmission from a dnor car to install in "Butters" our newly aquired coupe. This was a good running "donor" car, we've had it a couple of years and the engine ran very well.
Decideded to do a valve adjustment while it was out... Three broken exhaust head studs, cylinders 1, 4 and 6 on the 1981 3.0 engine. Lovely. I've got pretty cold feet about repairing this ourselves. I've read Wayne Dempsey's book and still just don't feel that confident. What I'm looking for is a reputable shop/individual that I can take the "long block" to and have all the lower studs replaced and possibly a valve job done. I'll then pick it up, put the ancillaries back on and we'll reinstall. I travel regularly to the California Bay area, Sacramento, Portland, OR and Seattle and can take the engine there for the work. Any ideas? On a budget if I EVER want to do DE's... Thanks guys! angela

I hope I don't sound ignorant but are these the bolts that fasten the exhaust manifold to the engine?

Ryan - No, not those. I WISH they were those. The headstuds are a major issue. You can see them when you take the valve covers off. They go from the head, thru the cam assembly, thru the barrels and into the case. On the 3.0 engines, it is almost always the exhaust side that breaks as they are a different material than the intake side. Probably better than 1/2 of all the 3.0 engines running around right now have broken head studs. Not everyone is lucky enough to have three on the same engine though!
In order for us to repair them, tear the heads, cam assemblies and probably the barrels. All of them were broken off "long" which means that there is plenty of material to grip on and yank them out, but the catch is you are pretty much doing a top-end tear down to get to them... angela

PM sent to John. Funny, alot of the threads I researched regarding ways to repair broken headstuds, headstuds to use etc., had John Walker offering information on them.
