3.0 to 3.2 Conversion
While during my rebuild I have decided to upgrade my 3.0 to 3.2 via the big bore 98MM cylinders and pistons. I have also gone to the 964 cam grind. I am replacing the head studs with raceware (I got all 24 out last night - what a relief) and also putting ARP connecting rod bolts in place. Is there anything else I should consider changing??
I assume the 3.0 connecting rods will work fine as the stroke is not changing. I am running the original oil pump as it appears to be in excellent condition. Do I need to change anything on the heads? Any words of wisdom??? I would hate to miss something as now is the time to do it right, rather than do it twice. The pistons are easy to get, the cylinders are impossible. I got mine for about $600 with turbo pistons (usless to me) and only 3500 miles on them.
I'm currently looking into replacing the case studs to, just for added security. Chain tensioners (the new kind) are an obvious upgrade. Perhaps you could look into getting some performance valve springs since you will obviouly be using the added performance you are buying. On top of all that, see if you can get a good valve job done. With the constant advice and consent of the amiable Steve Weiner, I just finished building up a 3.0-liter motor that we took out to 3.3+ liters, on Steve's recommendation--100mm p/cs. The car is a 1983 911SC Coupe. What was done at the time was all the normal renewing and upgrading--new ARP studs, valve job with Aase titanium followers, stayed with the stock oil pump, hydraulic camchain tensioners, new everything--but we also went with twin-plugging and bench-flowing the cylinder heads (which Steve did), S cam regrinds, PMO carburetors, SSI headers, Fabspeed exhaust and some minor other stuff I've probably fogotten...
Interestingly, after a two-year restoration project, the car moved for the first time under its own power about an hour ago (though I'd run the engine through an initial cam break-in on jackstands). Funny thing is, though, the entire "drive" took place within my small barn: backed the car up six feet, moved it over four, up 10, etc. etc., in order to get it off the 2x10 runners upon which it had been sitting so that I could shim and level them in preparation for a basic suspension alignment and then put the car back on them. So at least I know first and reverse work. Someday the snow will melt and I might even be able to reach a road. Stephan |

I will be doing the tensioners as well. Thanks. I had not thought about performance valves springs. I did replace them with new springs after I had the valve job done. I went with the 964 grind because it was not too radical and I am keeping the CIS system. One of the cams had a suspect spot on the #4 intake lobe upon disassembly and I was going to have to address that spot anyway. Thanks Again. ------------------ 78 3.0L/3.2L CIS 911SC |

Get your cylinders bored and sleaved. That's what I am doing. Bore out and sleave my 95mm Alusil cylinders to 98mm with some kind of super metal sleave. Work is being done by the same person who does Steve Weiners machine work.

When you refer to a "964" cam are you saying that an SC cam has been ground to 964 specs? The 964 (C2/4) has a different cam arrangement than the SC, I don't think you can install a cam from a 964 in an SC. I have seen/heard of the 964 cams for the CIS cars but don't know the origin of this upgrade.
