What is the going rate for a regular oil change at your authorized porsche dealer? Had an appointment for a regular routine oil change today and after it was done was told that the fee was $210.00 for non-synthetic oil. Have been with the dealer for 3 years and was paying $90.00 for prior oil changes. Talked to manager without any answer or explanation. Manager said that has always been the fee. Is this a reasonable fee or should I switch dealerships.

My local wrench charges $65 for Castrol/Mahle filter. The Porsche Dealership charges $110 for Castrol/Porsche filter. I started doing it myself for $25 :-)
$250 seems pretty high for dino-oil. ------------------ Dan Tolley 1987 911 Coupe http://www.cheaterswayside.com/911/gallery.asp?sort=0&userid=294 |

You can do this yourself. This board is a trememdous help in that regard. Next time out, ask and start to defray the cost you have paid from the dealer$hip.

Sometimes dealer service charges border on complete lunacy. For example, I took my 88 Carrera to the local Porsche dealer for a 30k service. They quoted me $680 -- not cheap, but not out of the park; the recommended local independent wanted $600. Asked them how much it would be to mount and balance a set of new tires I would provide, and they wanted $210! I took it to another Porsche dealer and had that done for $60. Then I asked the same dealer how much to change out the front and rear Targa seals: $1150. That's $450 for the seals, which their own parts department quoted me $230 for earlier, and 10 hours of labor. Independent wants 4 hours labor but suggests letting a body shop do it.

My mechanic charges 3/4 of a $75 hour, or about $60. My dealer charges $110 (and washes & vacuums the car)

Was that all they did??? If so, stuff your wallet back in your pants and burn rubber leaving the parking lot. . .never to return!
Just my humble opinion. |

The only thing I go to the dealer for is to look at the new cars and to pick up the few parts I can't find anywhere else.

One of the local dealers charges $130-$150 (can't remember exactly) for an oil change on a 964. My mechanic charges $120.
I called the same dealer about new rear tires recently: $500 EACH for S02 Pole Positions (225, 16). Tirerack has them for $180 each. Hmmmm...$1000 for new rear tires...no thanks. |

Ditto for the dealer as a show and tell only stop.
I wanted a valve adjusting tool, you know the little feeler gauge. Dealer price $40.00. My reply "How much for one without the Porsche Crest?" They told me there was no crest. I told them Bye. Pelican part#PEL-TOL-P213, $10.90, that's where I bought it. I only go to the Dealer parts counter when there's a gun at my head. |

Parts and Technical Reference Catalog, 911 Models 1974-1989. $9.95 is printed clearly on the cover. Dealer wanted $60 for it. I ordered it from MyPorsche for $9.95.

Does that price include sexual favors or does the service manager just ask you to bend over? I hope you get a kiss! |

Do it yourself in less than an hour for $25.00. Who knows you might even want to spend another 3 hrs or so and adjust your own valves. 45 more minutes and change the tranny lube. Uh oh, on a roll here.... why not adjust clutch and shifter linkage while we're at it. A pleasurable Saturday indeed. Beware these activities can become addictive.

Paying $200 dollars for an oil change is a communist plot to sap, and impurify OUR PRECIOUS BODILY FLUIDS!!!!
What do they want to replace a lightbulb?? 20grand??!! Do it yourself...I don't even care if you can afford $200 every 3K... the car will love you more if you do it yourself. |

I think in my past year and a half on this board, this is the first time I have seen the word "dealer". Doesn't get said around here for the obvious reasons.

I just changed the oil in my 85 carrera today- took all of about 30min of real time, not counting the time I just let the oil drip in the bucket. Spilled about 2 drops on the floor. Bought the filter from pelican- forget how much, and a dozen quarts of oil for about $25.
If I can do it- anyone can. gary |

Being on a LOW budget I've learned to just do the work on my car myself. It costs a lot less and you learn about your car at the same time. And with the people on this board and from your local PCA region, working on your car can be relatively easy (sometimes)and a whole lot of fun (always)!
