wire on oil breather cap

What does the wire/sensor on the oil breather cap do? It's on the newer engines (i.e. a 1986 3.2L).

I have never seen a wire/sensor on a 3.2 oil breather cap.

Temp Switch On Breather

It's a temp switch for the engine compartment blower.

Ah you may be right. I was confused by the terminology. When he said "oil breather cap" I assumed he meant "oil fill cap." But of course he could have meant "oil breather housing" which does contain the temperature probe for the blower fan in the engine compartment.

Huh - well, it's the cap on top of the housing.... anyway I don't need it in my install - I don't have a blower fan. There must be some way to extract some ueful information from it tho... maybe I'll connect it to my data logger some day.

Thanks, and sorry for any confusion.

Does anyone know the part number for this switch? Specifically I'm looking for the part number for the switch on an '86 3.2 engine.

Thanks!

Thanks Duke!

Next question - does anyone know if I can use a pre-'80 breather cover on a 3.2 engine?

I'm backdating the heat on an '86 engine and have deleted the engine heater fan. I think the heater fan switch on the breather cover is leaking and instead of replacing the switch I'm thinking about backdating the breather cover and eliminating the switch.

Since the breather cover gasket is the same for '65 - '89 I'm pretty sure I can backdate the cover.

They all interchange, at least through the end of the 3.2 engines. Same 4 6mm studs, same gasket. Same tiny weeping/dirty spot I can't seem to get rid of.
