weird 915 action...

this am went to start car, fine, but attempted to engage reverse and got lots of grinding/whining...tried 2nd then reverse...same/same. Left for work wondering what could be the problem. Thought about it and decided to engage reverse before starting. Car jumped then promptly broke free. What would cause the disc and the flywheel to stick like this? Car is a '86 cabbie w~150k. mi orig clutch. One possibility, though don't know if this is possible, disc is worn to the rivets and over the course of a long damp wknd bonded with the flywheel? Tia.

I have seen on several occasions, the actual clutch disc, will stick between the pressure plate and the flywheel. Every time that I have seen this happen, you could look at the flywheel and pressure plate and see evidence of over-heating, like it had got hot enough to "melt" in between them. Also when the engine had cooled, it would be basically stuck the in way that you left it to cool. I have seen them stuck so bad, that it had to be pulled and a pry bar used to separate the components. I would think that 150K on the original clutch, might be a very large part of the problem, and it is getting too thin and is slipping, whether you can feel or hear it slipping, causing the parts to overheat, resulting in the "fusion" It sounds like there is a full clutch, replacement parts set in your very near future. Good luck!!
