If you could choose any color-how would you paint your car?
I'm getting ready to have my sc painted, it is currently an ugly brown 81 targa. authenticity is no concern for me, but It will be a Porsche color, somewhat 80's but I really don't care if it is "period correct"
I've narrowed the choices to, -Midnight blue -Carmine Red -Maybe Polar white Opinions are like*** but I'm curious to hear folks thoughts!! |
Go with midnight blue...
|
silver over black
I may just do that one day |
of the three you want
go with white |
|
Everyone knows you can't go wrong with guards red;)

White!
Hi, my 74/75 has the Chocolate Brown colour...
It is a real seventies coulour, that's for sure! In the autumn it looks great out in the open with the colurs of fall... And, well some of my friends really like it! It is very different in colour from most 911's here in Norway, never seeen one in the same colour "live", probably never will! It sort of grows on me... The Gulf inspired car is a clear favourite of mine and would be my choice, if possible! From what you listed, I would choose - WHITE!:) |

I lived in stavanger for three years, loved the country. |
Of your choices, I would personally pick midnight blue.
If I was in your position, I would pick a unique color. Something factory, but rare. I've always though the dove gray cars of the late '60s were cool, along with that desert tan they had for awhile (think the ducktailed, turbo-bodied car in Excellence awhile back). For "fun" colors, I love Continental Orange, Viper Green and Mexico Blue. |
It took me many years to find just the "right car" with just the "right color paint". My taste was finally satisfied with a Guards Red, Cabriolet, with black all leather interior. I guess that I would be partial to the Guards Red cars.
|
Mexico Blue, same color it was originally.
And yes, it will be returned to this color when I can get around to it. . . http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1199904056.jpg (not my car, and mine is a Targa, not a Carrera, but you get the idea). |
those are cool colors in that picture don't get me wrong
but the first thing that comes to my mind when I see those colors on a 911 is jellybeans ducks for cover... |
+1 on the Gulf Blue,I get a huge amount of compliments on the colour.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1199905946.jpg

How ugly is the brown? If you haven't already, I would take a look at a few cars that had a color change to decide whether the color change isn't uglier than the brown. The details on color change cars are usually ugly in their own right. Just my $0.02 worth.

Back to the original Conda Green!
|
Ugly Brown?

What color is the interior? Assume black since you didn't say.
I like Silver Metallic, but not w/ brown or tan interior. |
Love Mexico Blue....

I do think that most color changes are unattractive, less attractive than an original brown paint job, no matter what you think of brown. |
white

In the early 90's I was looking at an SC that was 'copper'. That car sold before I could get it, but I still have a soft spot for that color as it was the first time the bug hit with any reality. ie, I knew I could actually drive the car of my dreams.
Anyone know what color that would have been? Pictures? |
It could have been #443-Copper Brown Metallic.
|
How about Platimum Metallic?
I just got my car resprayed to the orginal color. As I was told, there is a slight variance from orginal. Sometimes lighter and sometimes darker. I ended up with the dark option and love it.
I would not have chosen it but do like the bad boy look. Still can't help but like Mexico Blue. There was a guy in the neighborhood that had one when I was a kid. I couldn't wait to see him drive by. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1199914009.jpg |
no doubt!
color speaks for itself!! my all time favorite....http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1199914485.jpg

I'm big on tradition.
German cars should be silver Italian cars should be red British cars should be green etc. I'll always remember the first 930 I ever saw - silver w. black interior. If I had the need & the choice, that's what I'd go for on my black/black '87 3.2 coupe. That being said, IMHO dark blue is a good color. It especially looks good on a 911 that has chrome. This is largely based on long nose cars I've seen. So, of the colors you have in your original message for your SC - I'd go for the midnight blue. |

And boy oh boy has it ever made a lot of extra work for me trying to get it ready to return to its original beauty! |
Just some info on paint codes. Say you have paint code XYZ, but when you get some, it looks off color to what you are trying to match, and you think the paint mixer screwed up... This may be due to sun fading, but most of the time, it is due to the actual paint code having multiple sub codes for the paint. I was painting a car a few years back, that actually had 12 different sub-code mix formulas, even though it was XYZ paint code, it had many different mix formulas.

+1 on the gulf blue I have no regrets and get plenty of good comments :)
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1199918421.jpg or second choice has to be white, I get plenty of good comments on this as well :) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1199918540.jpg just my thoughts STEVE SmileWavy |
If I was to change the colour of my 911 I would change it to guards red.
|
Not white. White is one of my least favorite colors for any car, but may be my least favorite for 911's. There was a white one I considered buying about 10 years ago, but it had spoliers, color-keyed fuchs and a red interior, which was a pretty cool looking combo. I personally think brown is OK, but many years ago a friend had a nice 79 coupe in brown, and it took him forever to sell and the main complaint was the color. Finally someone that said they didn't want a brown one bought it anyway as they knew it was in great condition.
|
If I could, and only if it would work (which it will not, I am told) I would start with a bright chrome or nickel plating over the entire body. Over that, I would put a semi-transparent coat of paint...just about any color would do. Any Blue wold look great.
Why chrome/nickel with a semi trans paint? When the light hits the car, the shine and gleam from it would be tremendous. Enormous depth and reflection. |
Take a look at British Racing Green. Not a Porsche color but it should have been.
|
I used to have a '79 Targa that was silver with a brushed SS finish on the Targa bar and polished petal Fuchs. It was a nice blend of old & new. Unfortunately, it had a saddle interior...who the heck puts a brown interior in a silver car? If it had a black interior I'd probably still have it.

Not a problem at all. My 74 is original Choclate Brown from the factory and I would never repaint it another color. But if I had a 911 and wanted another color, I think I would lean towards a Dark Irish Green. |
