Interior dust, something is disintegrating
There's lots of dust building up on the interior on long drives. About the size of salt. More brown then gray or white. Not course at all. Might be blowing in from heater vents. Thought I'd check with you guys to see what might be falling apart.
Jeff

Not COARSE?, you mean? Fine? Like table salt...
Check the under seats, sometimes the foam disintegrates and you get powder-like particles. |

I think it is the foam from the visors.

I don't know much about '87s, but with my '71, I believe it is the foam above the headliner. The original owner only drove my car 4,000 miles in 30 years (total mileage of 52,000), and everything was DRY. It was so bad that I couldn't drive with the windows down on the highway - always fun in the summer - because small, brown, SHARP particles would come down, and never fail to get in my eyes.
![]() I've since put 3,000 miles on the car, and it's better - I can now drive with the windows open - but I still have to occasionally wipe down the dash, door panel tops, etc. I've learned to live with it, accepting the fact that my car has dandruff. ![]() My 1.5 cents. John |

Same here on a 70T. Especially at speed (weatherstripping is 38 years old) it sometimes snows in the car. Thanks for the info about the headliner. It seems to be comming from there and the passenger visor.

Thanks guys. The dust is not coarse. If you rub some flakes between your fingers they immediately turn to powder. I will check my visors and read up on the fresh air butterfly valve seals. My 87 is a Cab so no headliner.
Thanks, Jeff

Hi Matt,
I removed the sound pad about 1000 miles ago. It was seriously deteriorating. When I removed the pad, I placed a sheet over the engine and vacuumed as best I could. I would think that most of the residue has long since dissapeared but I suppose some could still be lodged in the heater ducts. Won't have much chance to investigate until tomorrow. Jeff

that sound pad stuff is a pain in the butt. I would find a small amount on top my air filter housing after every drive.
![]() -I too finally took the shop vac to it and got rid of all of it. Also replaced my air filter as it looks like there is a build up of that sound material all over the air filter. -what a mess that stuff is (was).

I think its the paper heater hoses. I remember my old ones use to blow into the cabin from time to time..sometimes as paper does, a glow! Mostly, it was the flakes of ash.
