912 owners , unite! Lol. Most of the important differences between 911's and -12's are:
Engine, of course-wet sump flat four 1.6L from the 356C (and the 2.0 VW Type 4/Porsche 914 in the '76 912E) instead of the 911's dry sump flat six.
No oil tank (or cooler, or lines.)
Engine mounts are 2/3 of the way back on the side rails in the engine compartment instead of the rear corners like the 911.
No standard rear sway bar.
Solid rotors (again, except for '76 913E) and smallest available torsion bars/swaybars.
And, as mentioned in a previous post, early cars had a 3-guage dash instead of 5.
As far as "handling better", I dunno-sure, 912's are lighter then a comparable 911-engine is lighter, no oil tank or lines-but more important is the fact that 912's have a slightly better weight distribution than a 911-2 fewer cylinders hanging off the rear of the transaxle. But then again, that's 2 fewer cylinders of torque and horsepower.... ------------------ Clay McGuill '66 912, '97 Jeep Cherokee www.geocities.com/the912guy |
Why talk about WE 912 owners and THEY 911 owners? A Porsche is a Porsche and every model has it's charmes. Let's talk about WE Porsche owners!

We say WE 912 owners because we own 912's. We say THEY 911 owners because they own 911's, not we. We say this on this post because its about the differences between the 911 and the 912, not Porsches in general. However, for the most part 911/912 owners talk as a WE Porsche owners. Just look at all the 912 owners on the 911 board.

I think we can distinguish among ourselves w/in the forum here, because we're all Porsche owners, with impunity and a total lack of hierarchy, "at least that's what we 912 owners tell ourselves".

My 911 and 912 are totally different feeling cars. The 912 definitely doesn’t have the power of my 911 but it is extremely light and agile. The first thing you notice when driving them back-to-back is the "lightness" of the 912 and the more even weight distribution. The Carrera feels very heavy, but it has the power to overcome this penalty. The styling of both are now classics of their eras. Also, I wish my Carrera had the opening vent windows of the 912. Don't ask me to choose, I love them both. JPerry 68 912 85 Carrera |
