what is this sound when doors are locked?

I've an 89 Coupe. I seldom make use of the door lock button (on the console),..just on occasion to make sure she works.

While driving with a buddy recently (me letting him drive), he reached down to engage the red button on the console to engage the power door locks. They engaged and we pressedon with our discussion of the car....a bit later, we noticed a weak (faint) beeping sound (maybe every 2 seconds). Sounded very much like a wrist watch alarm....Disengage the red button for the power door lock engagement and the sound goes away. No doubt that it's related to the actuation of the power door locks.

Do any of you guys experience this? Normal?

(frikin' weird....)

Best,

That's the ejection seat button relay alarm. Lets you know the relay's out, so that the ejection seat won't work. Lucky your buddy didn't get catapulted through the sunroof.

(No, my car doesn't make that sound when using the central locking button.)

Noah930: my reference to "listening closely" has ONLY to do with the emitted sound and NOT a reference to "listening" to what I posted. Didn't want to come across the wrong way, as this was NOT my intentions.

Inanycase,.....89 owners?

Best to all!

In my car, you won't hear anything except the engine and exhaust noise, if you have to identify such little sound
No, mine doesn't have that sound.

Not much engine/exhaust at idle, eh? (although certainly best time to ID this STRANGE beeping, no?)

Being an audio engineer, my ears are quite tuned to ALL nuances of this 911,..to include this distracting sound............my dog ears pick it up easily now (especially now that I'm familiar with it's frequency,...a recording engineer's nightmare!)

Has not one damned thing to do with performance, as she's providing all of a perfect childhood every single time she's tasked to do so........

NEVERTHELESS......either this SHOULD be happening or NOT. (time for "anality",...definitive answers,..I'll surely dig into this in the very near future,..that is: once I hear back from a strong census of ((((maybe))) '89 owners.

Again: any 89's out there that can check this for me?

AGAIN,..turn everything off and listen VERY, VERY closely......

maybe I'll have to post a .wav file, huh?

It's happening guys (4sure),..I'm NOT CRAZY and hearing things that aren't there...

Anyone?

Best (again),

Yes, I hear that. It alternates from left to right door when doors are locked.
This is on my 90-C2
I think the sound comes from the ring around the door lock stick and it matches the red light on the stick (visual alarm).
I suppose yours is a late 89 with the same central alarm as the 89-94

the '89 964 does it and yes, it's in sync with the red flashing of the door lock buttons. i remember this from when my dad used to leave me in the car when i was a little kid when he would run into the grocery store or the bank or whatever. it means the alarm is on, so that if you unlock the doors manually using the round guys in the door panel, the alarm will still go off (engaging that stupid VW horn that's different from the usual air horns that are activated when you hit the steering wheel pad). ask me how i know.

Doyle,
I was actually 1/2 joking 1/2 admiring your sentivity. I went out more and tried to listen again and again, more than once, until I definitely KNOW for sure there is no sound at all. I know you are saying 89 but I thought all 87 to 89 are the same. Is yours a 89 carrera or 964?

I have an 89 carrera, and central locking, and the beep. It's pretty high pitched - not many people can hear it. For those that can, it's bad.

Cause is as mentioned above - solenoid or relay or whatever when the light in the lock goes off. I thought about disconnecting the lights, but I think the deterrent factor of the flashing lights is 90% of the alarm system's efficacy.

Basically I just drive with the doors unlocked. I guess you could switch to an LED system or some other such nonsense, but the doors unlocked when driving solution has worked for me so far.

All '89's 3.2's should have the same alarm system as the '89 C4, with the flashing LEDs in the top of the door lock buttons and the faint chirping when activated.

I hear it and it drives me nuts. No driving with doors locked. I have a rattle in the door I haven't chased down yet, and it's obviously in the lock linkage because it goes away with the doors locked. I'd rather hear the rattle than the beeping. It's that annoying.

I just never locked my doors before........the sound was immediately noticeable to this recording engineer who has a set of "dog ears" on him! I'm with CCONNER on this,..it would easily drive me nuts if allowed to saty on.....

Think I'll go outside and see what happens when I MANUALLY lock the doors (just now thought of this,....mmmm?)

I'll find this cursed sound emitter soon and kill it dead (while keeping the flashing light circuitry operational).....Why would I possibly have a need to "hear" anything related to the alarm system? A visual flashing makes sense........chirps? nada....

Best,
