2 questions:
1. My windshield is very lightly pitted all over, though it is not very noticeable unless the sun is shining at the right angle. a. Is there any treatment for light pitting? Would rubbing compound help or just make the windshield opaque? (!) b. I have not seen windshields advertised in the usual places. How much do they cost? Could I get any old windshield store to install one, or should it be done by a Porsche expert? 2. There is a small stone chip that made a crack in the windshield, about 3/8th" long. Is there something I can/should put in this chip, or does it not matter (other than cosmetically). ------------------ John C 1988 Carerra coupe 1957 Speedster replica 1997 A6 Avant |

Can I tag on to this post?
At what point can you turn to your insurance company and tell them that the window, without cracks, has become a hazard in and of itself due to multiple pits and wiper blade "fogging" in a fan pattern? My windshield is hard to see out of whenever the sun shines directly on it. I'd like to simply pay the deductible to have the windshield replaced. Also, it is a '78 SC; can I still get original 'glass for this, without the ant. embedded in it? Thanks much, Jw |

I priced a new windshield at Binswinger Glass here in Houston for my '81 SC. $385 installed.
This may be your solution for the hazeing. http://www.eastwoodco.com/cgi-bin/sgin0101.exe?T1=40011&UID=2001032811422399&UREQA= 1&FNM=20 As far as the rock chip, I would recommend letting a glass shop fix it. Priced between $25-$50. A friend got 2 chips in his 2001 Ford Pick-up. Glass shop fixed them perfect. [This message has been edited by GT911 (edited 03-28-2001).] |

Tweeks sells the OEM winshields. I'm sure they are not the only ones though. As for fogging and what not, check out pepboys or similar for a special spray that gives the window a film that helps with rain runoff and clairty.
Hope this helps Adam Roseneck ------------------ 1978 911SC 3.0 roseneck@cyberbeach.net |

Guys:
I've seen new windshields advertised in a lot of magazines for around $200, & on the way to work this morning, I saw a glass company sign advertising repair of windshield stone cracks (the small ones) for $30. I understand my insurance company will outright pay for that repair because they don't want people to wait for the crack to propagate & make replacement of the whole windshield necessary. Check it out. ------------------ Marv Evans '72 911E |

Call around to your local auto-glass replacement companys to get either oem or replacement glass. Tweeks advertised my 914 windshield for almost $400 while a local (ocean) quoted $150. Either way, I will have to install it myself.
As far as the insurance clain is concerned, it depends on the company. My wife's ins. co. said it was covered while my comany says it's like tires and that the safety of my car was up to me. It only takes a call. If they say it's not covered, then wait for a crack like I did (only took a few days on New England's sand covered roads) or find a rock to hit you (a punch or ice pick looks the same when struck lightly with a hammer) then you are covered. There are glass polishes on the market. I have heard that Griot's Garage has one of the best polishes on the market, but I have not tried it yet myself. Good luck. ------------------ Dave 1970 914-6 (soon GT) |

I doubt that you can get genuine Porsche OEM "SekuriT" glass for under $200. Inferior aftermarket windshields are generally crap. Before selling a 944T, I had an aftermarket (Still not cheap)windshield put in to make it look good. There were bubbles and variances all through it. If I would have kept the car, I would have definately found an OEM one. Just my $.02

Look for PPG brand windshields. Steer clear of the made in Mexico/South America crap such as Pilkington. I got one (PPG) installed from Elite Auto Glass (a chain here in CO) for $240 including a new molding.

Has anyone found a windshield seal without the slot for the trim pieces? I really hate the trim.
AS for the 3/8 crack, it will only grow as you drive and the air pressure exerts force on the windshield. With all the pitting, however, it sounds like a new one is in order. After 18 years you really can't complain. ------------------ Paul 78SC Targa |

I called Safelite (they have a web site), and got a windshield that I'm very happy with for about $170, installed. The guy who put it in did a great job with the chrome trim, as well.
It was a tremendous improvement on the original 1973 glass. You don't know how much fading, etc., has taken place until you've got a nice clean piece of glass in front of you. ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T (3.6) sunroof coupe jackolsen@mediaone.net |

Paul, if you want the non-trim windshield seal from the 964, you have to put in a 964 windshiel. My cost after a 45% discount was going to be $1200! They all have the antennae built in. You can't get one without. The later ones are slightly larger with a correspondingly thinner seal. I've heard of guys using the original seal and stuffing thick, stiff wire into the seam instead of the trim. It is supposedly hidden inside and gives the appearance of no trim. I'm not sure what size wire, but a look at your trim should give you an idea.
