sorting out electrical issues, clock and tach

Sometimes at night when it's cold, i turn my car on, turn on the lights. The clock gauge light would not light up, and the time was wrong (tested used gauge from dc auto, so im sure the clock is ok). I thought i fixed this problem with new crimp connectors, however it proved to not be the fix.

During cold starts, the tach would bounce around a lil, indication of voltage regulator failing. however i had recently replaced that. I held a digital voltmeter across the battery terminals. Minor fluctuations from 13.8 volts to about 14 volts. So i ruled out the voltage regulator as the cause for my bouncy tach.

However, as i pried the clock gauge out of the dash the light came on indicating a loose connection somewhere for the ground wire. Do the tach and clock share a ground wire somewhere? I am hoping so because i really do not want to think my tach is on it's way out.

whats the battery voltage when starting?
i left my door open the other night, interior light was on. when i tried to start it, it turned over slower than normal and i noticed the tach bouncing a lot. recharged battery and all is well.

I will check, but last time i looked since having this problem of the bouncy tach, voltage with car off was 12.45. I will check again tomorrow morning. In the meantime i need to chase the clock ground wire back to it's source so i can replace the wire.
