cd box testing?

how do i test a 3 pin cd box to make sure its ok?
i bought it as a replacement. it came out of a "running car" on ebay.
but you know how reliable that can be.

Let me be the first to suggest you do a search. Poster: Early_S_Man. Topic: CDI...

i did, and found fantastic schematics and comprehensive rebuilding instructions.
i also found extensive engineering discussions way over my head.
i now recognize the valuable contributions warren made and what a great loss his death has been.
pwd72s you could say that about every post here, its all been said before, probably 100 times.
i frankly admit ,however, i'm a dope i need the "cd testing for dummies" version.
is there a simple step by step description?

sorry it took me so long to respond. I have the impression that without sophisticated bench testing things like Warren had, about all you can do is plug it in the car & drive in order to "test". You might contact Loren at
http://www.systemsc.com/ And ask if he'd do a "test only" for a fee....

Bob,

Just connect +12v to the "B" terminal on the bottom and the battery ground to the "D" ground terminal on the case. You should hear a high-pitched whine, about 2Khz in pitch. That "whine" is the transformer used to step up the voltage from +12v to charge the capacitor.

If you hear that, there's a decent chance it's working. To really test it, you would need to trigger it . . . but you should NOT try that as you will destroy it without the proper load. And don't connect a meter to the CDI, either!

And if Warren (RIP) were here he'd say Do Not Touch the "A" terminal, or you will get a nasty 460 Volt shock!!!!!

Good luck!

Would that method work on a 6 pin?
