I need a set of track wheels. Fuchs are great but the prices are high compared to Cookie cutters.

I have not been to the track for a few years, but I recall a lot of racers using cookie cutters as race wheels.

The cookies aren't quite as strong as the fuchs. The fuchs are lighter. I can't tell you by how much but I picked up a 7x15 cookie and a 7x15 fuch and the fuch was lighters. The Cookies are made by another company too. Don't get me wrong though, the cookie cutters are good wheels.

Cookies are built by ATS, as are teledials. They are cast aluminum as opposed to the forged fuchs. They are strong enough compared to the vast majority of aftermarket wheels, except the few that are forged (Kinesis, some BBS, Fikse). Their main advantage is that there are a lot of them, and people don't really like their looks, so they are cheap. But they are nothing special in terms of weight or strength.

Can someone tell me what the difference is between forged and cast wheels? I was asked the question and kind of choked on it the other day.

The ATS "cookie cutter" 6 x 15" weighs only 0.2 kg more than the 6 x 15" Fuchs (5.8 kg).

The Fuchs are stronger and come in better sizes for racing than the cookie cutters. You can't get 7x16 or 8x16 cookie cutters.

Casting and Forging are two different processes used to make parts such as wheels. The casting process pours molten metal into a mold, where it cools and produces a part. Forging uses a blank part which is then pounded into shape with dies. I believe the Fuchs wheels are extruded into their final shape. Excellence had a good article on producing Fuchs wheels awhile back.
Forging aligns the grain of the metal with the shape of the finished part, resulting in a tougher part. I have heard that Fuchs wheels will not break, only bend. Maybe someone can share a good war story about this. |

Good or not, War story or not, I bent one some years ago.
3am after locking the bar, chasing a friend on another friend's moped around the parking lot. For an ending flourish, I went to finish of with one of those ten feet tall and bullet-proof moves. Always look for oil patches before you try a stupid stunt, put the tail sideways into the curb, I bent the outer lip in about an inch deep and about three inches wide. It didn't go flat, the inside edge where the bead rides actually stayed almost completely straight. Anyhow, the reason I was touring around here is I remember how I almost threw the wheel across the room when I picked it up without a tire. I'm currently shopping around for alloys for another car and the choices are being unfairly compared to the Fuchs. I never weighed the wheel while it was without the tire, but I'm still using how it felt as a benchmark. Does anybody know what the 8x16 pieces actually weigh ? Edit: After posting this, I looked at the remaining info from my search list and found Bill Verburg's 8" vs 9" question that had weights for 7s and 9s listed.
