SSI or Dansk Stainless
I'd like to know what you guys think. I need to replace my heatexchangers on my 84 carerra, my options as of now are SSI 2 in 1 out or Dansk stainless 1 and 1. If I go the SSI route I would also need to purchase the exhaust and engine tin, would this increased cost be worth the increase in performance? Also, what is needed to keep the original heater set-up?

I am thinking of doing the same to my '84 this summer. I believe you also have 2 oil lines to change. I wasn't aware of changing any engine tin though.. There are several useful articles in the Tech section of Pelican. By the way, our host has all the stuff you need.

Examine exactly what you're trying to accomplish. My heat exchangers were on their way out and needed to be replaced. About the same time, my car became exempt from emission testing, so I went with the SSIs and a 2-in-1-out M&K sport muffler, eliminating the cat. If I would have had to still be smog-legal, I would have gone with the Dansk or OEM heat exchangers. Since you have a Carrera, you have the option of a Steve Wong chip to increase power and keep your car smog-legal if you need to do so. If you backdate your exhaust, you'll have to change out some oil lines. For some people, it goes without complication. In my case, everything that could have gone wrong went wrong.

ssi has excellent quality. also check out ghl. nice quality, larger diameter tubes, with or without heat exchangers and no need to change oil lines.

I have had dansk and they are ok but the ssi's are way better. either way you have to use the back dated oil lines

The SSI option sounds like the route I will probably take, but what about the difference in heating configuration from stock to backdate, OEM vs SSI. I would like to keep to original engine heater fan installed and usable.

No head stud issues because all of that was fairly new and had been coated properly with anti-seize upon being rebuilt. However, certain oil line connections, particularly those going to the oil cooler thermostat didn't want to come off, at least without kinking, binding, breaking.....you name it. Ben was there and it was frustrating for both of us. Anyway, just understand that when you start trying to get certain connections undone that haven't been apart for 20 or more years, there very well may be issues. As I said before, your final decision will probably be determined by how smog-legal your car has to be. I felt that the more smog equipment I could remove from the car (properly) and set it up correctly after the changes, the better off I would be.
