911SC QUESTIONS

I have 2 questions to throw out there-
first my 78 has a couple of broken head studs. This is very common I know, but how dangerous really is it? The guy that writes for Excellence makes it sound like a major disaster. There so far(since last year when discovered) have been no noticeable effects on performance. I drive this car a few hundred miles a month only.
Second- has anyone replaced the front blower motor for the a/c? I need to and don't know if it is a do it yourself item..I am pretty handy but no master tech. LOVE THOSE 911S!

I think characterizing it as a "major disaster" is not that far out of line, as far as the life of an SC goes. Given the mileage on most SCs, it basically means that you are going to be in the market for a complete rebuild of the engine, which is about the biggest financial disaster you can have on a 911! (depending on your mileage and philosophy, you may be able to get away with just replacing the studs and a top end job, but its still not cheap).

Having things bang around while you drive the car is not a good thing, and will eventually cause major problems that will HAVE to be fixed. The longer you wait, the more expensive it is likely going to be to fix.

If it were my car, I would not drive it anymore until it gets fixed.

I can not help on number one questions.
Number 2. Are you asking for the small fan for the front condensor? if so here it is.>Remove the spare for more room, on the left front there is a small black plastic casing that holds the fan, remove all the screws that are holding it in place and take the unit out after disconecting the power cord. Remove the clips and open the unit up there is a small screw on the end that holds the motor in place. remove the motor and take the round cage off and replace the motor. Put it all back and your ready to go.

Alan,

If you haven't seen the pictures of flame-cut heads and cylinders in Bruce Anderson's Porsche 911 Performance Handbook, maybe you should take a look! Cylinders and cylinder heads are not in the category of cheap replacements!

I would not recommend driving your car at all, but you will have to make that decision! If it is a matter of life-or-death, dire circumstances, so be it! But, your repair costs will escalate if you continue to drive it!

Now is your chance to upgrade the valve springs. The '78s (early ones) had bad springs that liked to snap, if I remember right. My PO went through this (VIN on mine has serial number 0877). The PO missed a shift at DE and so the topend was rebuilt around 65K; total around 122K now (not money figure!!! Ha ha, cough cough).

Question

This may seem pretty dumb, but I guess this is how we learn...

What happens when a head stud is broken, as far as symptoms? I'd hate to have a broken head stud, and not know about it.

Cool

Hi Lee:

Usally under acceleration you will here a
Loud Rapping sound from the engine. Also at the bas of the Cylinder here it connects to the Case look fo oil leaks. During a valve adjustment the head studs can be turned by hand indicating they are connected to nothing. These are just some symptons I am sure there are more
