Question German Auto Dismantler's Inc

What can you guys tell me about these guys?

I'm interested in the calipers that they sell, but I'm not sure of their reputation.

Unless you're willing to spend over $500, you'll be lucky to get them even to look for a part. Guy on the phone was an ass as well. That's my experience

I've had one dealing with them -- for a car.

If they do not specifically commit to something, assume it is not there. the car came with several resellable parts removed. It also did not roll, so had been picked up and moved around on a forklift(!)

Not the level of care and professionalism you'd generally want in the Porsche world.

I have bought a few engine parts for my SC and numerous 924 parts. Their price is usually the best. They have delivered every time for me with only a few minior issues. If you are buying used and you want it cheap, you may have to accept some minor snafus now and again.

I tend to get p!ssed instantly when I pay a premium for a new part, wait a week +, then recieve the wrong part etc etc, however if I paid pennies on the dollar, it does not seem to bother me as much. Just ask for names when dealing with them, so if you have a problem, you will know who to ask for to make it right.

From my experience, these guys are not sheisters, they are a Porsche "junkyard" (not an epoxy floored, airconditioned, computerized warehouse).

I bought a 930 tach from them via Ebay a couple of months ago.

They shipped internationally with no huge surcharge.

It arrived quite promptly, it was well-packed and in good condition - exactly as stated/shown in the photograph in the auction.

I fitted it. It worked perfectly with no surprises, and it's in the car now.

It wasn't incredibly cheap; but it certainly wasn't more than I was prepared to pay for that part. All in all, it was a good deal and a smooth transaction.

[Edit]
Oh yeh, it was less than $500 as well. Much less.
[/Edit]

Some of their brake upgrade "advice" is distinctly dubious (slotting 864 front caliper mounts to fit on a 911? Muahahahaha!) But, hey, they're a junkyard that happens to dismantle Porsches, not race car engineers...

They also seem to value some parts considerably higher than I do, but hey, no one's forcing you to buy at that price - and they're definately not as ambitous in pricing as a Certain Porsche Breakers in SoCal seems to be...

They used to go by the name PAP parts

Yeah - there a junkyard. If you've had any dealings with a good, old fashioned junkyard, then you know about what you're dealing with.

It's about 40 miles from me - have driven up there several times to buy stuff from them.

They are disorganized, prices are O.K.. Wouldn't order from them unless you are willing to spend some time on the phone.

Not really crooks, just intensely disorganized

Great place to visit. Acres of wrecked Porsche's. Be great if they just gave you a screwdriver and a bucket and charged you by the pound...

I have ordered numerous things from them over the years. I was fully aware that I was ordering used parts and was never disappointed. Prices were good and shipping was prompt (I usually receive stuff within a day or so being 1 state over).

Does Cogbill still own the place? I've talked to him on occasion. Don't know what to make of him. :>)

Thanks for the inputs gentlemen.

I'm still on the fence if I should stay stock or not. It seems a wise decision since I'm not racing the car and the stock brakes work fine.

It looked like an okay deal on ebay, though I've been a bit leary recently of ordering Porsche stuff off of ebay in the past year. I geuss one second chance offer was enough for me to lose faith in some of the sellers that I haven't dealt with before.

Yeah, I am pretty sure the guy I have dealt with there has a last name of Cogbill. I recently bought a rear drive shaft coupler and a set of horns for my daughters 924 for half of what the other Porsche "dismantlers" were asking ($40 for the splined coupler). It is a rare item to fail and Stoddard wanted $300+ for a new one that they would have to order from Germany!

This conversation reminds me of my college days when I recommended a junk yard to a fraternity brother. He went there in kakhis and dress shoes and got quoted a ridiculous price for a part for his Escort GT. I went back a week later wearing my old greasy ripped Carhart coveralls and got the same part for him for half the price without even dickering!

I live in GA and when I need something from them I make every effort to call and set up a time to go up and pick the item up, they have recently (several months) ago moved to a new location,

They are beyond doubt the largest Porsche " bone yard " on the east coast bar none, the problem is they are very very disorganized and alot of their stuff is actually rotting away outside in the elements, they do offer roller cars from time to time as well as engines semi complete pulled from wrecks, you can't beat the price but if you are mail ordering the parts and unable to look at them at the time of purchase you might want to shop someplace else or be ready to accept what ever they send you.

Bottom line, cheap parts and a good deal if you are there in person to look and pickt item you want.

I talked to Cogbill when I was looking for an oil pressure sensor for a 2.0 engine. He said he had one and quoted me a price. I paid for it and then sat for two weeks waiting for it. No call. No nothing. I finally called again and he said he'd take of it. Another week of nothing. When I called again, he got snotty with me for not having any patience! He refunded my money the next day though.

Back when it was PAP, I got a strut. It took a few calls, but it came and was good. $250 then for a lousy Boge. But, I think 20th Street was closer to 300! Search here for PAP.

BTW, they still use "PAP" in the ads.

PAP is now a seperate entity near Columbus Ohio. They sell only new parts. They are pleasant to deal with and being so close, I buy lots of parts from them when I need them NEXT DAY for my families daily drivers. I think they still have a link to GAD on their website, but they operate independently.

I've never bought anything from them, but in fact Joe Cogbill is quite the race car engineer. He raced a Speedster that had been fitted with full coil over suspension among other engineering modifications, and won championships in it. He also ran a tube frame 968 with all carbon fiber panels.

I've ordered from them via ebay. No problems.Never spent $500. Although, they seem to be a bit pricey on complete engines. I don't know what thier reserve are on thier 3.0 but it has to be over 4K. Ouch!
