SW Chip! DME question

Bought a Steve Wong chip for my '86 from Pelicaner. Installed and the car runs as expected. Smooth throttle response, improved torque throughout powerband, etc. Couldn't be happier. The only problem is the idle is about 1k.

Question: Of course I only read the instructions after the DME was reinstalled. Didn't check to see if it was 4k. I'm guessing if it wasn't I wouldn't have to ask this question. Do I need to open it back up to check?

Thanks!
-e.

-e-, do a search, I believe your answer may lie within. Also Steve is very responsive to questions about his products. E-mail him on his website. I'm sure he will respond very quickly.

Well, of course I did a cursory search before asking. Didn't find an answer to this particular question, though I could have easily missed it, there are quite a number of posts re: SW chips. That's why I didn't bother to expound upon the results of re-chipping too much.

When I did mine, Steve told me to turn down the ilde. You short some test plug on the left side of the engine bay and turn a screw. Check in 101 projects, on adjusting the motronic idle.

Thanks for your reply. I understand about the idle. I'm really concerned about the DME. If it's 2k, it needs to be modified by moving a jumper on the board. (Mine's an '86). I didn't check that while I had the box open and am wondering if I need to open it back up or can I assume it's a 4k by the fact that the car runs great. I am reluctant to open it back up because the metal tabs are showing some fatigue. The PO had another chip in the car, so they've been bent a few times already. In fact, one did pop off when I was closing it up.

Most 86s are 4k enabled already, so if it starts and runs, you don't need to do any jumper mod. The only thing the 84-86s may need to do is turn down the idle adjustment screw 2-3 turns clockwise to lower the speed down to ~880 rpm. That's the one on the throttle body staring you straight in the face that you'd use a 7mm hex socket to turn. See the bottom of the following page:

On a different subject, I've been very busy relocating for the past three weeks and setting up at the new location, while trying to keep business flowing along, so if I'm slow or haven't replied to your emails, just resend me again - thanks!

Thanks for the clarification, Steve. That's about what I figured. And thanks for a great product. Of course I had read raves from everyone about the difference in performance your chip makes. But you really have to experience it to "get it".
It feels like a new engine!

That happened to mine too after installing the SW chip. For some lazy reason I didnīt get around to adjust the idle, but funny enough it has slowly adjusted itself back to normal around 880-900 rpm.

Mine was a 2K...I've done the mod to go for a 4K as per Steve instructions (a very easy mod). I have to re-adjust the idle afterward because it was at 1000 rpm.

You mean after Steve Wong said it was unnecessary? Not if you were me, I'm taking his word for it.

I just installed a chip from Steve in my '84 RoW 911, and couldn't be happier! I didn't have to do anything to my DME except remove the stock chip and put in the new one.

Thanks again Steve!

Glad I glanced at this thread. Steve, I'm sending you a chip to be remapped. Almost sent to the old address.
