Thumbs up Put the front struts in

Dunno if it is my car or what but I got both front inserts in in 30 minutes. Piece of cake! The rear shocks were actually harder because I had to remove my air filter box to get at the shock nut. The car feels tons tighter. I used a fully adjustable British damper called Spax. They are big over here, but it still took the guy an hour to talk me into them. Very inexpensive and a quality product. Torsion bars and sway bars are next. One bad note of the day... on my way to the shop my windshield just split right down the middle. There was a small stone chip in front of the mirror and I guess today's relatively warm temp was too much. I had been praying for a warm day... I just can't win Lemmie know if anybody wants details on the shock change.

Thumbs up

30 mins? Wow. My 88 Carrera front shocks are klunky now and I was thinking of replacing. Looked at the description in Bentley it looks like it would take longer, taking off the caliper, rotor etc to get at the strut tower housing. Details please...

Cheers,
jeff

Did you drain the old hydaulic oil from the strut casing. For some reason a half hour sound a bit to quick..I dunno. Draining the strut casing is a job in itself if the struts are replaced while the assembly is still on the car...

The Bently's book takes the conservative route in changing the inserts. All I needed to do was impact off the strut nut in the trunk area. Then you can compress down the strut and pull off the dust cover. On the top of the stur housing there is a screwed cap which came off using two pipe wrenches. One to hold the strut and one to unscrew the cap. Then you just turn the steering wheel to allow for the most clearance, compress the strut and slide it up and out along the fender as you pull the strut housing away from the car. Be careful it's pretty tight. Then you just clean up the oil in the strut housing. There was very little in mine so I just cleaned up what I could. I guess I could have spent more time cleaning, but I dunno. It was that easy. Just be careful not to hit the fender or put too much stress on the brake lines or wire for the sensor. It was cake. I dont want to mislead anybody but I was scared this was going to be real tough and it wasn't.
