H-4 modification

I just replaced the H-5 on my 87 with a new set of H-4. Can they be modified so that when you use the high beam that the low beam also stays on.

If possible will the wiring in the car be OK?

That's a lot of current draw. You will need relays for sure and possibly an alternator with a higher capacity like the ones they use in the cars with the big amps. But yes, a relatively experienced auto electrician could make this work with additional relays. The thing is, you would either always have the lows on when you light the highs or you would have to provide a switch other than the one in the stalk. I don't think it would be worth trying to modify the contacts in the stalk.

I know I could wire that up. Another way to do it would be to use a fog light switch to light the highs. One last thing: the lamps will get very hot and may not last very long. It would be better to try this with H1's.

Try the new Osram 85/80W Hyper bulbs (ebay). You won't need to operate both high and low simultaneously. These bulbs were designed to really put out the lumen, about 2300, without posing any risk or damage to the plastic reflector.

I tried this. Used relays and diodes. Lasted a very short time before both H-4 bulb grounds melted open. That means I also had no low beams 20 miles from home on a non-lit empty road.

it was another one of my bright ideas.

I can't tell the difference on the street and on the Hy I can read signs same. I'm blind, crippled, and crazy so it works for me.

If they last more than the 10,000 average night miles of the 130/100 Narva's I'll be happy. They are beefer.

I need another ride to really test them.
